Besting the iPhone Deal In Canada

With all the negative buzz about the Rogers iPhone, mainly over Rogers overpriced data plans, people are forgetting about the other half of the Great Canadian Media Duopoly. Most of the major cellphone carriers in Canada offer cheap, sub $10 data plans of one sort or another which include 3G speeds. Of course, these plans apply to non-smartphones, leaving out Windows Mobile and Blackberrys. Anyone who’s tried the ‘mobile internet’ on a standard phone knows that you don’t need ‘unlimited’ because it’s such a horrible experience. With one exception…

Blizzard (finally) announces Diablo III and will try to pry that console controller from your hands

After a week of wild rumors sparked by the gradually evolving teaser image that Blizzard posted for the 2008 Paris Invitational event, it was announced today that yes, everyone was correct. Diablo III is coming out ‘when it’s done’. They are not straying too far from the 3rd-person, isometric view, hack and slash gameplay of the first 2 games. Of course they have updated the tech to today’s standards, and if the videos posted online are any indication, the final game looks like it’s going to be a beautiful action-packed…

Rogers to Customers: “Hey, at least it ain’t France.”

Rogers has quickly responded to the overwhelming ire from would-be happy Canadian iPhone owners with an interview in which they justify their data plans and costs as being more than accommodating to the “vast majority of consumers.” “Unlimited plans could end up costing customers more for what they don’t use,” the spokeswoman argues. “Our iPhone plans more than accommodate the vast majority of customers.” In the article, the Rogers representative argues that because plans in Europe, including France’s carrier Orange, are arguably more expensive and offer less than Rogers’ plan…

Bruce Campbell’s My Name Is Bruce – Coming To Theatres This Fall!

Although I’m a geek, I’ve never been a fanboy of anything, technology, music, movies. I’m much too cynical. Except when it comes to the Evil Dead movies. All my friends can attest to that. I’ll make an argument why Evil Dead 2 deserves to be on everybody’s Top Ten movie list. So, when I came across this news it was the first fanboyish trigger I’ve had in my brain in some time (probably since I bought my ticket for Bubba Ho-Tep). The Bruce Campbell movie “My Name Is Bruce”, starring…

Bell’s Own Data Shatters P2P Red Herring

About a week ago, the CRTC demanded that Bell release to the public by June 23rd information that would prove it’s claim that P2P throttling was having a negative impact on it’s network. Some, but not all, of that information has been made public. Many details are being kept from public view for ‘competitive’ reasons. Even the scant evidence released shows exactly how flimsy Bell’s case is. One would assume that the company would release the most damaging evidence, but their claim is that over a 2 month period, 2-5%…

If you aren’t already excited what’s wrong with you.

This Friday Wanted is coming to theatres. For those who might scoff at another Angelina Jolie action movie, please remember that the film is being directed by Timur Bekmambetov, know to true film geeks as the man behind the Russian movies Night Watch and Day Watch, that despite somewhat convoluted plots boasted some of the most impressive and imaginative visuals seen on the screen since the Matrix. If the Wanted is even only half as cool as the trailer makes it seem we are in for quite a (happily R-rated)…

AMD ‘Officially’ Launches Radeon 4870, declares cinema dead.

In a previous post Doug mentioned the spiffy ‘real-time rendered’ animation AMD (ATI) showed at a press event, declaring it the birth of ‘Cinema 2.0’. Hyperbole aside this week AMD has annnounced their new ‘King’ of graphics cards, the Radeon 4870. Ringing in at the $300 USD range it is certainly a much better buy than the new Nvidia GTX 280 launched last week, at $650! However unlike the Nvidia card the 4870 is not available in stores yet (due at the end of June), whereas the GTX 280 could…

Metal Gear Solid 4 via Zero Punctuation

Yahtzee’s Zero Punctuation reviews are NEVER safe for work. Even if you’re not a gamer, they’re always worth watching. In the latest one, he talks MGS4, succinctly compiling all the criticisms of the game in one juicy little nugget, and stripping out all the gushing fanboyism that’s required of many gamings sites that are more concerned about their advanced copies and advertising revenue than their journalistic integrity.

Podcast Update

We’ve made some tweaks to the podcast links, so you might want to re-click on the links to get up to date. This is more of a maintenance thing for my sanity, and the old links will still work. We’ve also added a new Podcasts page to the site, which also has all the feed links, plus direct links to each of the podcasts in high and low resolution formats. The direct links will be posted within a day or so of the feeds being updated. We’d love to hear…
