Best Buy Canada’s Free Phone Fridays – more killer (on contract) deals including the Xperia PLAY

Best Buy Canada’s Free Phone Fridays returns with some killer deals – if you sign a new 3yr contact. This week’s deals include the Nexus S, ATRIX & Xperia PLAY for $0. With the announcement that the mobile version Minecraft is coming exclusively (at first) to the PLAY perhaps it’s time to consider getting a 2nd phone? Also if you are on the fence about the PLAY we should have some videos posted later today of it in action – it is, IMO, hands-down the best mobile gaming experience you…

LG Optimus Pad impresses in hands on video

The LG Optimus Pad is the latest in a long line up of Android 3.0 tablets hitting store shelves these days (in the US it’s known as the G-Slate on T-Mobile), but LG has made an effort to differentiate itself from the pack, by offering a slightly different form factor.  Currently there’s no WiFi only model available in Canada, but I hope LG rectifies that soon, as it does offer a unique experience.  You may be asking “But it’s Android’s Honeycomb, it’s all the same, right?”.  You’d be right, but not all…

Boxee Box gets another update, cements its position as the best HTSTB money can buy.

Much has been said of the Boxee Box, D-link’s fledgling foray into the world of home theatre set-top boxes, running the gamut from “streamlined” and “Polished” (agreed!) to “Disappointing” (…not so much). While it’s true that D-link’s little box has been lacking in some key areas (cough cough MUSIC PLAYER cough), when it comes to ease of use and across-the-board file compatibility, Boxee sits in a class that is simply untouchable by heavy hitters like GoogleTV, Roku, and especially AppleTV. Now, after a scant 6 months, Boxee has widened that…

Saturday Morning Science 012

The future’s uncertain and the end is always near. Roadhouse Blues- The Doors The silly season is well under way. Today the world is going to end. Joe Stalin engineered the Roswell saucer crash. The Centre for Disease Control went viral with a zombie attack piece. And don’t get me started about Lars Von Trier, his silly “worlds in collision” movie or his public airing of his private Fuhrerbunker. I’m glad this is a science column. I could just walk away and say none of this is on my beat….

Konami’s E3 2011 Pre-Show events and how to win tickets

E3 Is probably the biggest video game exposition, and this year it takes place June 7th to 9th in Los Angeles. That doesn’t mean you have to miss out, as Konami is hosting a series of pre-shows live across 5 different cities, including Toronto. The venue for Toronto couldn’t be more apt, as the Real Sports Bar & Grill is adorned in a slew of HDTVs, inlcuding a display over the bar itself that stands about 15 feet high, and I’m not talking about a bunch of smaller panels with seams.

“THE GEKITSUIOH GAME – Doodle War” at FITC 2011

Back in the days before smartphones were everywhere, high school students had a lot less options to kill time during a spare period or two. Some would actually go to the library to do their homework but most, depending on the proclivities of their particular clique, were either out by the football field smoking or hanging in the cafeteria playing cards and paper drawn spaceship games (the RPG set usually hung out in the library in my high school).

Game Of Thrones title sequence design

If you haven’t already seen the HBO series Game Of Thrones, which airs in the US and Canada, I can’t highly recommend it enough. Based on George R. R. Martin’s fantasy series of novels, the setting is more medival earth in a lot of ways compared to most sword and sorcery fare. It also has an amazing title sequence which stands as a work of art in its own right.

Saturday Morning Science 011

Caveman Blues -I’ve been working up a piece about Neanderthals, collecting links on current research and rereading older theories about our enigmatic, long lost relatives. The problem is; we just keep finding stuff and it keeps getting written up as somehow conclusive or definitive when it’s really just cumulative. Take for example two findings from this week, I’ll cite the Science Digest articles, not because the folks at that site are doing anything wrong (in fact they are getting tighter on their writing and presentation) but because even the good…

Best Buy’s Free Phone Fridays – this week’s Android deals

Best Buy Canada has followed the Best Buy US lead and is offering a selection of ‘free’ phones every Friday. Of course there is a catch – they are only free if you buy the phone on a 3-year term, as a new activation. While this means that not everybody can take advantage of these deals, if you are no longer in a contract or looking to switch carriers, you can pick up one of the latest Android phones by just signing a piece of paper! The phones included (and…
