Indie Fund wants to help bring your game to market

The Indie Fund has been established by seven notable indie game developers, including (but not limited to) Braid creator Johnathan Blow, Ron Carmel and Kyle Gabler of World Of Goo fame as well as thatgamecompany co-founder Kellee Santiago.  Their goal is to help the funding of independent game development by support projects financially.  If you have a game at the prototype stage, and a video to go along with it, you can apply for funding right now. They’re certainly not looking to fund multi-million dollar Halo or Grand Theft Auto…

RED squashes major bug, EPIC and Scarlet back on track

After a major delay to a major bug in their new designs, RED is back on track with the EPIC and Scarlet cameras.  Originally estimated to come out in 2009, the delays on the new digital cinema cameras were hitting ValveTime levels of unpredictability.  RED founder Jim Jannard had this to say in a post last night… …we have located the wicked, mean and nasty bug and our engineering team has put a bullet in the back of it’s head. That pesky bug has put us behind in our schedule…

Cold calling for hackers

As a hacker, you live by what you think is a high code of ethics and standards. You pride yourself on your good work, you take your work very seriously and it’s not uncommon to work every waking hour to meet a deadline. Every year or two you invest lots of time and effort learning a new technology, be it a new programming language, server platform or design paradigm. When you stroll into the office every morning, you can almost be forgiven for having what appears to be a chip…

Fable III to be released as episodic downloads as well

Although Fable III will be shipping physical copies, news via Co-Optimus has it that if you’re not so interested in having a pile of discs lying around taking up shelf space, you can opt to download the game in episodic format shortly after the release. Soon after the retail launch we’re doing episodic. We break it down in chapters. We give away the first chapter entirely free, the first hour. Microsoft Kin is dead

Just a couple of months out of the gate, and Microsoft has killed it’s KIN line of no-so smart phones, before they even had a chance to get outside the US. This isn’t surprising on a number of levels.  While the phones were well-spec’ed, with an interesting take on the UI, the target of younger social-media centric types (read: teens) were probably not ready to shell out real smartphone monthly fees.  Not many teens (or their parents) were interested in paying $70 a month for a phone.  The launch of…

Toronto Outdoor Summer Movie Nights

Tonight is the launch of 10 weeks of free movies in downtown Toronto.  The Outdoor Summer Movie night event is a partnership between the Toronto International Film Festival,  the CN Tower and the Toronto Entertainment District Business Improvement Area.  Sure, it’s a mouthful of, but over the next couple of months, every Wednesday at 9pm you can go to Metro Square (map) and watch a pretty wide variety of films, from Casablanca to Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, and special menus from many local restaurants. The opening night events, featuring the…

Walking Dead blog: Robert Kirkman and Greg Nicotero interviews

It’s pretty obvious why AMC is going all out on the official Walking Dead blog.  It’s mainly publicity, and a dash of assauging the fear of some fans that an adaptation of the comic into TV format might water down the gruesome contents.  On the latter, I think there’s little to fear now, as they’ve been pretty open that this isn’t going to be a PG show.  Of course, fans of AMC’s other shows, Mad Men, and the absolutely brilliant Breaking Bad probably guessed this right out of the gate….

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is now an annual event!

A few days ago Christopher Butcher, the TCAF Festival Director & Co-Founder, posted his festival wrap-up on the TCAF website, Torontocomics.com. In this he thanks everyone who attended, and “some of the organizations and individuals who worked to make TCAF 2010 such an unprecedented success”. We can attest to this — this year’s TCAF was the best ever, and you can see all our coverage here. However the biggest news in his post was the announcement that the Festival would be returning in 2011, and would be occurring annually from…

Rogers confirms, again, that they will carry the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro

A few weeks ago we posted about our discovery on Rogers website, in the list of compatible devices for the Rogers on Demand Mobile application, confirmation of the Rogers Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini and Mini pro. Smart people that we are, we reached out to Rogers to see if they would confirm, finally after a few months of rumours, that they would be carrying these phones. Of course, instead of confirming, all we got was a ‘no comment’, and the offending page was promptly changed to erase all trace…
