L4D2: The Passing – impressions

After last week’s release of Left 4 Dead 2’s “The Passing”, a couple of us here at rgb have had a chance to run through it and give our impressions. If you haven’t heard of it yet, “The Passing” is a new campaign for L4D2 that not only adds a missing episode between “Dead Center” and “Dark Carnival”. It’s free for PC players and 560 points on Xbox Live. “The Passing” is a little shorter than most campaigns, with 3 chapters instead of the normal 5, and an average playthrough…

Why Android Market Has No Games

After a few days of Nexus One ownership I began looking for games, preparing to be hypnotized by games as amazing as the Nexus One itself. After my first search, the list of games I found was the following: Robo Defense Lite (an ok tower defense game), Labyrinth Lite, Poke A Mole, Pinball and BreakTheBlocks Lite. The list of games after the top five were similar and included many more brick breaker, whack-a-mole, snake and pong games. Underwhelmed hardly describes how I felt…

We weren’t actually going to post anything…

…on the iPhone 4G leak, since the combination of the hundreds of posts and articles online, in the mainstream media, and on The View!, has really drained the life out of this story. However some lively comments, made to each other via email, made me think that it is still our civic duty as a tech and geek news website to say something about the 4G, so here is what we all think:

GravyTrain world premiere tonight

One of the most fun moments at Fan Expo last year was when we chatted with filmmakers April Mullen and Tim Doiron, and their great indie mockumentary “Rock Paper Scissors: The Way Of The Tosser”.  The duo are back with the new comedy GravyTrain, and the trailer suggests that even with a bigger budget the film is infused with the same sense of humour as Way Of The Tosser. As an interesting side note, GravyTrain is the 3rd Canadian feature to be shot on the Red One digital cinema camera….

Finally the cast of Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 get to meet, and in the trailer above Francis and Rochelle get their hate on together. The chapter also introduces the weekly Mutations events, as detailed by Valve on their L4D blog: The Passing introduces a series of weekly game mode events dubbed “Mutations.” These are week-long runs of new gameplay modes that range from “Realism Versus” to “Chainsaw Massacre”. Each…

Dell’s push back into mobile leaked

Dell was a pretty major player back in the days before PDAs and mobile phones were mashed together to become smart phones. A device with a 3.7″ VGA screen and a 624Mhz processor sounds like pretty decent specs. Well, Dell released the Axim x50v back in 2004. The next year, they release the x51v, which was the last of their Windows Mobile devices. Although they didn’t have phone capabilities, they were certainly very powerful devices back in the day, and even now holder their own against some mid range smart…

Sony Ericsson confirms no multi-touch or custom ROM’s for X10

While we still haven’t completed our review of the Xperia X10, we thought we would do a service for the enquiring minds that have been speculating on whether the X10 will eventually support multi-touch. While there has been both positive and negative answers to this question posted on multiple tech sites, we feel that the response we got from Sony Ericsson is the final say on this matter – Owing to the particular hardware and software configuration of the X10, multi-touch capabilities will not be enabled in the core platform…

NASA captures solar flares, confirms human insignificance, all in glorious HD

What you’re looking at above is awe-inspiring for two reasons; one, it’s a Gizmodo story that has nothing to do with a leaked iPhone, and two, it’s some of the first imagery and data sent back from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). In it, NASA was able to capture a full solar flare (or “prominence eruption”) in action, as well as several views of the Sun’s temperature variances and magnetic fields through several different wavebands. The purpose goes far beyond snapping pictures of the impossible, too: SDO is designed to…

**UPDATE:  Zacuto has finally released Part 3 of their incredible HD-DSLR vs 35mm Film Shootout!  This EP focuses on resolution tests with all these cameras plus the new Canon T2i and green-screen compositing tests.  The green-screen tests are VERY interesting indeed.  Hit up the link at the end of this article to watch all the camera goodness. HD-DSLRs have arrived!  While indie filmmakers –including yours truly– have applauded its arrival, many professionals in the Film and Television industry still think of them as a fad, not to be taken seriously. …

Kin: Microsoft aims at mobile sociability

After Microsoft unveiled its Project Pink as Kin there was a lot of speculation as to what it really meant, given the major noise Microsoft has been making about its other phone strategy, Windows Phone 7.  The Kin phones and service are clearly targeted at a teen demographic, in the same way that Gossip Girl targets the teen demographic by portraying a lifestyle 99.9% of their audience will never achieve…  you know… aspirational. The snide remarks aside, after taking a look at what Kin has to offer, and the pedigree…

Motorola finally releases the Telus Milestone Android 2.1 update

While there has been no official anouncement from either Motorola or Telus, a post on the Alldroid.org forums tonight said that the Android 2.1 update was finally released yesterday. At the moment it seems the update must be done with the Motorola software updater tool, found here – there have been no reports of an OTA update yet. Since I own a Milestone I will report on how the update went soon! UPDATE ONE: Success, though since I had a semi-rooted Brazilian ROM running on my phone, the update utility…
