Canadians to Broadcasters: “I want my Web TV”

In a recent study, it seems that more and more Canadians are turning to the Internets for their boobtube fix. But if you’re among them, and if you’re a fan of virtually anything not available on Canada’s major networks, and even then if that content is U.S. produced and not licensed for any distribution beyond your living room screen, odds are you’re getting your shows via non-sanctioned means.

Is the Canadian Wireless landscape ready for a change? Instinct says “maybe”.

As has been posted before, Rogers is not the only game in town when it comes to putting the internet in your pocket. The CDMA HTC Touch does the job remarkably well, and very affordably. But can it be called an iPhone Killer? Well, the jury’s kind of out on that, and the fact that it’s the only touch screen comparable wireless device available in Canada (either through Bell or Telus) keeps your options pretty slim. But as was inevitable, a whole slew of new devices is poised to flood…

MS to slash the price of the XBOX 360?

The internet Gaming community is all-a-buzz with rumours of a possible price drop on Microsoft’s gaming console, posted by the Hollywood Reporter. If true, the price on the 20gb PRO console will drop by $50, bringing it down to $299 US (from $349). Again, this can only be classified as rumour, but if it is true, then it appears that MS is already positioning themselves as the console to beat this holiday season. And with titles like Gears of War 2, Rock Band 2, and Guitar Hero World Tour already…

Canada’s unfair data rates get international attention, believe it or not.

Anyone who has even taken a cursory glance at our main page will know that we’re what you might call a little irked over the ramrodding Canadians are taking if they want to purchase an iPhone from Rogers. In a nutshell, Rogers is offering half what AT&T is for more money, and a third what O2 in the UK is offering, also for significantly more money. It’s a grossly unfair monopolistic practice that can in no way represent what the “vast majority” of consumers want or need, and considering the…

Rogers to Customers: “Hey, at least it ain’t France.”

Rogers has quickly responded to the overwhelming ire from would-be happy Canadian iPhone owners with an interview in which they justify their data plans and costs as being more than accommodating to the “vast majority of consumers.” “Unlimited plans could end up costing customers more for what they don’t use,” the spokeswoman argues. “Our iPhone plans more than accommodate the vast majority of customers.” In the article, the Rogers representative argues that because plans in Europe, including France’s carrier Orange, are arguably more expensive and offer less than Rogers’ plan…

The New Hockey Night in Canada theme composer revealed…and it’s YOU.

The CBC has launched Canada’s Hockey Anthem Challenge, a national contest to find a new song for its weekly hockey broadcast. The network is currently without a song after Dolores Claman, the theme’s composer, sold the jingle’s rights to CTV last week for a reported seven figures. The song will now be heard before NHL games airing on CTV-owned TSN. Canadians have until August 31 to submit their entry online, which will be available for public review and rating. At least five semifinalists will present their songs to a panel…

Symbian goes home to Daddy.

As quoted from today’s Macrumors front page: Seemingly in a response to growing competition from Apple and Google, Nokia is buying out Symbian Ltd and will open its mobile operating system for royalty free use. Nokia will pay $410 million to buy the remaining 52% share of the company that it does not already own and establish the Symbian Foundation. “This is a significant milestone in our software strategy” said Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEO of Nokia. “Symbian is already the leading open platform for mobile devices. Through this acquisition and the…
