Apple refreshes its consumer line, still not quite everything you’re hoping for.

Apple today released a refresh to the iMac, Mac Mini and Macbook lineup. The iMac now sports a 16:9 LED-backlit display at 1920×1080 (21.5″) and an extremely impressive 2560 x 1440 (27″), making it one of, if not THE, largest AIOs available (commercially, at least). Under the hood you’ll find a 3.06ghz Intel C2 Duo (upgradeable to a 2.8ghz Quad Core), at least 4gb RAM (but room for up to 16…that’s right, 16), at least 500gb of HDD space, and a variety of video options depending on which model you…

Too soon? “Balloon Boy” game takes pointless news story, turns it into pointless online fun

heyzap.com – embed games Just because I think it’s funny… Hot on the heels of the greatest non-story in recent memory comes Balloon Boy: The Game, in which our hero Falcon Heene attempts to glide his balloon to safety while shooting stars at seagulls and rainbows, all the while evading capture from media and government helicopters and other would-be saviours. As a player, your goal is to see “how many $$$ of taxpayer money can you waste?” If you can get past the vaguely passive-aggressive political jab, just see the…

The Finland model: A chicken in every pot and Broadband in every den

For a democratic nation, Finland sure plays it like a socialist. First they have arguably one of the best health care systems in the world. Then they throw in free day care. Sure they’re taxed heavily and the job market is described as “inflexible”, but all in all, the standard of living is pretty damn fine. And to sweeten the pot, they’ve just made broadband internet a legal right.

This video just Blu my mind

Argentinian graffiti artist Blu, who made waves a couple of years ago with his breakout animation MUTO, is back, and he’s not alone. This time he’s teamed up with American artist David Ellis to create COMBO, an expansive work that uses not only paint and ink, but the building itself as a medium rather than just a canvas. It’s a brilliant vision brought to life through decidedly old-skool means. From Designboom: the latest BLU animation was made at the fame festival in southern italy. the animated graffiti took over a…

An afternoon with George Lois: An Exclusive Sit-Down

Ask someone who George Lois is and you’ll likely be met with a “huh?” or “Isn’t he that guy who…?” But ask anyone if they know the phrase “I Want my MTV” and you’ll get the universal “Aaaaaahhhhhhh, THAT guy!!” George Lois is often described as “An Advertising Legend”, “The King of Madison Avenue”, or the “Leader of the Creative Revolution”. And he knows it. It’s a role he not only fits into well, but wears like an old coat; it’s not flashy, it’s not trying to impress anyone, it’s…

87 cool things: A presentation by Google’s Creative Labs

I’m at Advertising Week in New York City, and I just left the theatre at the Times Center on West 41st after a brilliant presentation that was led by Andy Berndt, the managing director of Google’s Creative Labs. The point of the discussion was to talk about how devices like home-brewed APIs, webcams and video have all contributed to the success of digital campaigns, collaborations, and events. Berndt’s points were illustrated by what he considered to be the 87 most creative, unique, exciting and interesting online creations Google could find….

Facebook becomes profitable. Mark Zuckerberg orders pizza to celebrate.

For the first time ever, Facebook is making money. In a blog post by CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg, the site generated more money than is spent last quarter, putting them half a year ahead of their own projections: Earlier this year, we said we expected to be cash flow positive sometime in 2010, and I’m pleased to share that we achieved this milestone last quarter. This is important to us because it sets Facebook up to be a strong independent service for the long term.

Alive in Joburg: Neill Blomkamp’s original idea that spawned District 9

There’s a lot of secrets in District 9, and apparently at least one Easter egg. This is “Alive in Joburg”, Neill Blomkamp’s 2005 short film about a race of alien refugees living in Johannesburg. In it you can see his sensibilities and unique vision shine through, and also catch a glimpse of some of the creative changes made to create the feature-length version, not the least of which is taking away the Prawns’ somewhat threatening presence and turning them into the imbicilic creatures of District 9. Definitely worth the watch….

So you wanna buy a Netbook.

Recently I was in the market for a new laptop computer. I was going to be travelling in the near future and I needed something I could carry around with me. It didn’t need to be a workhorse or anything; just something with which I could stay connected for email, internet, write a few blog posts, and maybe watch some episodes of Burn Notice on in my down time. Having no desire to lug around my tank-like Macbook Pro for these meagre tasks, I made my way to Best Buy…
