rgbFilter at FanExpo: That’s no moon, it’s a convention centre

rgbFilter is at Fan expo 2009 and we’re knee-deep in wall-to-wall nerdiness. The fans are out in full force and the exhibitors have completely brought their A game to Canada’s largest sci-fi, comic, horror, anime and gaming convention. A few hilights from today: – Larry “The Soup Nazi” Thomas telling Mona “NO AUTOGRAPH FOR YOU!!” – Emma “Anya the Vengence Demon” Caulfield having a smoke with us out front – Avery Brooks, Linda Hamilton, Mary McDonnell…ya they were there. – I touched the lightcycle. Oh ya. – The “Rock Paper…

Batman: Arkham Asylum drops today. And you can afford it.

There have been myriad Batman games over the years, but none of them have really quite gotten it right, and some were downright terrible (I’m looking at you, Batman Begins.) But the newest offering from Eidos, “Arkham Asylum”, has been making the review rounds for a little while now, and the feedback has been hugely favourable. Finally, after months of downloading gaming videos and waiting in line at FutureShop to get your hands on the in-store demo, the game drops today, and for a special price of less than $40…

Watchmen Blu-Ray “Maximum Movie Mode” takes Movie Magic, throws it out a window

Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen” is finally coming to Blu-Ray on July 21, 2009, and with it is what just might be the most comprehensive special feature set, well, ever. Dubbed “Maximum Movie Mode”, it takes the idea of the director’s commentary to an entirely new level, in that the director walks into the shot and dissects the scene, literally giving a frame-by-frame explanation of how it was made. The highly detailed walkthrough plays like a tutorial, including behind-the-scenes video, prop and stunt explanations, and easter eggs (watch for Snyder’s cameo in…

Apple’s WWDC 2009 keynote: What, they sell more than iPhones?

UPDATE JUNE 9: At the bottom of this article I mention that the Tethering feature will likely be a major money pit for those of us on Rogers. However, I just received this tweet from Keith McArthur, the Rogers PR rep who’s working on the 3GS launch. Here’s what he says: keithmcarthur@RebelScum Tethering is included free in data plans over 1GB or more until at least the end of the year. So there’s some good news at least. I recommend getting in touch with Mr. McArthur directly if you have…

The Beatles: Rock Band opening cinematic is a trip, daddio.

There’s no way around it; Rock Band’s cool. Getting together with some friends on a random evening and banging away on our toy plastic instruments is a pleasure that transcends guilty. But beyond an awesome gaming experience, one thing Rock Band has always done well is the opening cinematic, and it seems The Beatles: Rock Band is not only carrying on that tradition, but taking it to a whole new level. Check the video above to see what I mean, or see the original here. I have only 2 questions…

Leo LaPorte says what we’re all thinking…finally.

I’m no big fan of Leo LaPorte. While I consider him an honest and genuine reviewer and host, I find watching his show “The Lab with Leo” on G4TechTV to be irritating at best and frustrating at worst. The only thing I can imagine being more annoying that watching Laporte would be being a guest on his show; he habitually ends his guests’ sentences for them and guides his interviews with all the deft grace and subtlety of a punch in the face. But he’s no Mike Arrington.

Microsoft wants to rename netbooks with absurd 5-word phrase

While cruising around the Internets today I came across an article on Boing Boing that was just so right on, I just had to repost it here. As we’ve been gushing about around the rgb offices lately, Microsoft is getting a lot more right than it is wrong these days…but t seems that mantra has yet to trickle down to the marketing department. Enjoy. Steven Guggenheimer, Microsoft’s General Manager of Application Platform and Development Marketing, thinks that the term “netbook” should be abandoned. Instead, he says, such devices should be…

Sony’s E3 Conference: A little more of the same

Sony’s Jack Tretton took the E3 stage today to tell us all about Sony’s new offerings for 2009. After bragging about the upcoming ~350 games (including 35 exclusives) for the PS3, PS2 and PSP, and the (fact?) that the PS3 is the only console powerful enough to make use of the stage’s 40×80 foot screen, and the usual “we’re doing awesome” rhetoric, he cut to the chase.
