Bell launching Samsung Galaxy S Android smartphone soon

What is a ‘Superphone’? A smartphone with a large high-resolution screen, fast (1 GHz +) processor & HD video capture? If so, then the Sony Ericsson X10 on Rogers, a phone sadly hobbled by its out-of-date OS, could be considered Canada’s first Superphone. The Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant would be the second. Announced earlier this year, and released in Europe at the beginning of June, the Galaxy S was announced on June 29th to be coming to Canada with Bell. This was surprising news to us, since usually Canadians have…

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is now an annual event!

A few days ago Christopher Butcher, the TCAF Festival Director & Co-Founder, posted his festival wrap-up on the TCAF website, Torontocomics.com. In this he thanks everyone who attended, and “some of the organizations and individuals who worked to make TCAF 2010 such an unprecedented success”. We can attest to this — this year’s TCAF was the best ever, and you can see all our coverage here. However the biggest news in his post was the announcement that the Festival would be returning in 2011, and would be occurring annually from…

Rogers confirms, again, that they will carry the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro

A few weeks ago we posted about our discovery on Rogers website, in the list of compatible devices for the Rogers on Demand Mobile application, confirmation of the Rogers Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini and Mini pro. Smart people that we are, we reached out to Rogers to see if they would confirm, finally after a few months of rumours, that they would be carrying these phones. Of course, instead of confirming, all we got was a ‘no comment’, and the offending page was promptly changed to erase all trace…

Bell also releases the HTC Legend

While we are still waiting for our Virgin Legend to arrive, so we can post our review of the latest HTC Android phone to be released in Canada, we also want to (belatedly) report that Bell has also officially launched the Legend. As mentioned in the article about the Virgin Mobile Legend, the Bell version was released, as the leaks indicated, last week, on Wednesday June 16th, with much less fanfare than the Virgin version (who had Richard Branson on hand in Montreal to launch the phone). The Bell HTC…

Sony Ericsson announces Xperia X8, pushes up X10 2.1 update, and win an X10 from Rogers for Father’s Day

Today Sony Ericsson confirmed the existence of the recently leaked ‘Shakira’ mid-sized Android smartphone, when they officially introduced the Xperia X8. While Rogers has not confirmed, or even hinted, that they will carry this phone, it makes sense that they will, since they currently carry the Xperia X10, and will soon have the X10 Mini. The X8 fits in-between these two phones, in both price and size, and sports a 3 inch screen, 600 MHz CPU, 3.2 MP camera, and runs Sony Ericsson’s Timescape UI. This phone takes the best…

Virgin Mobile launches their first Android phone, the HTC Legend

In a surprise move, Bell launched the HTC Legend Android smartphone this past Friday, on their Virgin Mobile MVNO. Up until last week it was thought that the flagship Android phone in Bell’s line-up would launch on the main brand. On Friday Best Buy’s website was even updated prematurely, to show to Legend as available on Bell.  Later that day, however, it was Virgin Mobile who was the first carrier in North America to officially announce availability of the Legend.  At an event on Friday, Virgin Group Chairman Sir Richard…

Team Fortress 2 now on OS X, FREE this weekend

After Valve’s successful launch of Steam for Mac, this weekend sees the release one of the most anticipated Valve Mac games, Team Fortress 2, where the eternal debate of Mac vs. PC can finally be settled on the digital battlefield (Steam Play supports cross-platform play). The day Ian Fleming invented penicillin. The day scientists invented the moon landing. The day Sir Isaac Newton distracted the policemen investigating his wife’s murder by discovering gravity. All of these historic moments have two things in common. They helped steer the course of human…

iPhone 4 Retina Display – pixel density does matter

At the WWDC keynote on Monday one of new iPhone 4 features that Apple focused on was the 960×640 Retina display, claimed to be the “highest-resolution phone screen ever”. While I initially dismissed its worth as typical Apple hyperbole, an interesting article on tested.com has made me think otherwise Computer screens aren’t getting any bigger — in fact, they’ve only continued to shrink. While larger displays continue to dominate the upper end of the spectrum, an increasing number of manufacturers are producing netbooks and tablets more suitable for Middle Earth…

iPhone 4 announced, coming to Canada ‘in the coming weeks’

Yesterday was Apple’s annual WWDC, where they have announced each new iPhone model since 2008. This year the worst kept secret in recent memory, the iPhone 4, was detailed in Steve Job’s keynote speech, and, unlike previous years, there weren’t that many surprises. Everything lined up with the leaked images and specs, and rather than repeat what most of you have already read, you can go to Apple’s iPhone 4 page here for more details. The keynote was notable, though, for what was not mentioned — the rumoured trackpad we…
