Gran Turismo 5: Driving Force

Spoiler warning: Some cars in Gran Turismo 5 may come fitted with spoilers. You can also fit spoilers to pretty much any car in the Maintenance section. I’ve played every major version of Gran Turismo to date, including Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and Gran Turismo for PSP (but not for very long). Every time, it’s roughly the same story: I enter GT Mode, start completing license tests, buy my first car, and slowly work my way up to the pro leagues until finally, somewhere before I’ve completed every race series,…

Kinectimals review: Virtually Cuddly

Well, it was only a matter of time before there had to be something for the ankle-biters. With games like Kinect Sports, Kinect Adventures and Dance Central being aimed at an older audience, who’s to say that preschoolers should be left out? Kinectimals is most definitely for a much younger audience. My bets are on ages six and under. The game play is fairly simple, uses a great deal of repetition, a really basic storyline, and a big focus on interacting with a virtual cub. The appeal is that these…

Pac-Man Championship Edition DX review

Wow. I don’t believe I’ve ever started off a review with that word, but that simple three-letter word describes Pac-Man Championship Edition DX quite well. Continuing on the success of the original Pac-Man Championship Edition – only released on the 360 – this latest version of the classic franchise can be found on both the 360’s Xbox Live Arcade and PS3’s Playstation Network Store. And what an incredible $10 game it is. Taking the classic Pac-Man game play and bringing it into the current generation, making it relevant in today’s…

Fable III review AKA grinding for the greater good

I enjoyed the first two installments of Fable. Though never the most challenging gameplay Peter Molyneux and company managed to draw me into the world of Albion with their unique take on fantasy style role playing and a quirky sense of humour. Fable III is no different, and in many ways an improvement.  I think there’s a fundamental flaw with the second half of the game, which can’t be talked about with spoilers, but don’t worry, you’ll be warned.

Sony Vaio P review

Sony first launched the subnotebook sized Vaio P line of computers back in early 2009, during the heyday of the netbook. At that time they sold the line as a ‘lifestyle PC’, and not to competitive to netbooks, though many of the internal components were similar to netbooks. Price was certainly one differentiator between the Vaio P and it’s component cousins, as the 1.33 GHz Vaio started at $900 US. Since that initial launch, Sony has made some much welcome tweaks, including a very handy touchpad and a faster CPU…

Kinect Review: Are games just the beginning?

A lot has been made of Microsoft’s Kinect, the new motion detection system for the Xbox 360. It has lead many to draw comparisons to the gesture controls seen in Minority Report, and go so far as to say that it may even change the face of computing in the future. That’s high praise indeed, but what does it mean for gaming right now?

Unboxing Boxee Box – initial impressions

After what seemed like forever, Boxee Box by D-Link finally hit retail shelves on Wednesday, and being a big fan of the software, I made sure I was there to get one.  I didn’t have the official RGB Filter HD camera on hand, so I fired up my point n shoot with 720p, to give you a look at it, and the much anticipated remote with QWERTY keyboard built into it.  I was going to call this one “A look at what’s inside the Boxee Box box, when unboxed”, but…

Fallout New Vegas Review

Two years ago we fell in love with Fallout 3. It was a marvelously rich experience full of atmosphere and wonder. Now the wasteland is back with Fallout: New Vegas from Obsidian Entertainment. In this new title we’re transplanted to the west in and around what was once Las Vegas before the nuclear war. There is a lot to explore here so we’d better get started. It’s difficult to review this title without comparing it directly with Fallout 3. They have so much in common that playing Fallout New Vegas,…

Review: Metroid – Other M

The latest game in the long-running Metroid series is finally out, and for the first time it’s been created by Team Ninja of Ninja Gaiden fame. Other M is a direct continuation of Super Metroid, and it doesn’t skip a beat. Tying back to the classic game goes beyond merely connecting the dots narratively though, Team Ninja is tries to evoke many of the original aspects while mixing them with new elements to create something different. It’s an ambitious throwback with a melange of game mechanics from the older two-dimensional…

A shadowy figure reviews Break Up Club

While attending the Toronto International Film Festival, I admit it was mere whimsy that kept me checking my server for another hacked file, perhaps referencing one of the films I’d seen. But I never found one, and I had come to feel quite the grandiose fool for suspecting myself the target of some film-reviewing internet conspiracy, based on a single freak occurrence. That is, until last night, when I found this…

Toshiba Satellite A660 3D laptop review

When a review unit of the Toshiba A660-042 arrived at the studio, I wasn’t sure what to make of it. The A660-042 is Toshiba’s high end Satellite laptop, and comes complete with NVidia’s 3D Vision technology. I had just come off trying Sony’s 3D in the PS3 and remained unimpressed with 3D in the home. So my expectations were set pretty low. I may have been wrong, but I was also surprised at how much more than a ‘3D laptop’ this was…

Evangelion 1.11 – You Are (Not) Alone – review

Blu-Ray Release by Funimation Directors: Masayuki, Kazuya Tsurumaki, and Hideaki Anno (Supervising) Writers: Hideaki Anno, Yoshiki Sakurai So, I recently picked up the blu-ray release of Evangelion 1.11: You Are (Not) Alone, and realised that not nearly enough people know about this thing. More than a few of you are probably familiar with the original Neon Genesis Evangelion, but for those who aren’t, here’s a primer:  Shinji Ikari, an introverted teenaged boy with obvious family issues, on top of the usual “bundle of hormones and crazy”, has just arrived in…
