Mobilicity coming in June, with unlimited plan

According to the Globe and Mail, Mobilicity will be launching in Toronto at some point in June, and along with it an unlimited plan at a flat $65, which will include long-distance and data.  There is no actual confirmation of this, but it does seem like a likely time to launch. “We’ve been very tight-lipped about our launch date for very specific reasons. It’s a very competitive market out there,” Mr. Dobbin said. “However, we are measuring time to launch in weeks and days, not months any more.” Dave Dobbin,…

rgbfilter @ TCAF 2010: Day 2 Photos

On Day 2 we returned to Toronto Comics Arts Festival to talk to some more of the very talented writers and artists in attendance. We managed to get interviews with some great webcomic artists, like Ryan North, creator of Dinosaur Comics, Emily Horne and Joey Comeau of a softer world, Brandon Bird, and David Malki of Wondermark. We also talked to Jim Munroe, of nomediakings, writer of the ‘post-Rapture graphic novel’ Sword of My Mouth. Lastly, in a bizarro finale to the show, Alex interviewed Evan Dorkin, creator of Hectic…

Mobilicity clears CRTC hurdle – launching ‘spring’

Though the imminent launch of Mobilicity this spring has been more or less known for a couple of months, they still had to meet the ownership regulations of the CRTC.  Well, it looks as if, after a little bit of tweaking of their shareholder agreement, they’ll be cleared to go. As such, the Commission finds that, upon completion of the required modifications to the Shareholder Agreement set out in the Appendix to this decision, DAVE Wireless will be Canadian‑owned and controlled, meeting the requirements set out in section 16 of…

Don’t Miss the 2010 Toronto Comic Arts Festival

The first Toronto Comics Arts Festival was held in 2003, as a “natural progression of years of disparate book signings, author appearances and miscellaneous events” put on by world renowned Toronto comics store The Beguiling. Since that first event, it has quickly grown to be one of the most preeminent comic festivals in the world. Unlike other comic conventions, like the Toronto Fan Expo and San Diego Comic-con for example, TCAF does not focus on the big names (Marvel, DC etc.), nor is it full of aging actors from old…

Usage-based billing okayed by CRTC

The CRTC has unsurprisingly sided with Bell, and is allowing the big blue telco to go ahead with it’s usage-based billing scheme, and yes, scheme is the most appropriate word here. Not only does it mean that Bell gets to charge it’s own customers, who are already paying through the nose for parltry data caps, but now big blue can hit 3rd party suppliers, like TekSavvy and Acanac with fees that look downright preposterous. Bell has complained about traffic congestion, caused mostly by heavy file sharing, but as their own…

DMCA disaster headed to Canada!

Despite a vocal popular opposition to the idea of enacting anything like the lunacy of the US DMCA here in Canada, that’s exactly the type of copyright bill the Prime Minister’s Office plans on introducing this June. Who cares what the People say, when the US speaks, I guess, even if most of what they say regarding Canada as a copyright violators haven is propagandist FUD. Anyways, instead of ranting, here’s the details from Michael Geist’s site, as well as how to get your voice heard! Months of public debate…

Next is Now: Rogers branding video

Rogers held their annual shareholders meeting today, and like many of these types of meetings, there’s some slick, well-made corporate video to set the mood.  I’ve been on the editing end of more than one of these, so I know how it works.  The thing is, this one from Rogers, well, kind of works. Using stats projected in urban environments, it communicates the message that the future is here… or “Next is Now” if you will. Some of the stats are somewhat odd though.  I did laugh a bit when…

Is Microsoft’s Kin coming to Fido?

When Microsoft announced their Kin mobile phones and service, there was direct mention of both US and European carriers, but Canada was missing off that list.  That doesn’t mean we’re not getting it, and if the phone’s own files are any indication, it may hit Fido.  Conflipper, who’s well known in the phone hacking community, has dug through the provisioning files of a Kin and found a number of international carriers listed, including Fido here in Canada. If you’re not sure what provisioning files are, they’re files that reside on…

Apple pushes out Canadian iPad lauch, taking pre-orders May 10. Rogers announces iPad plans

On Wednesday Apple announced that, due to the popularity of the iPad in the US, the planned late April international launch of their latest must have device was going to be delayed until late May. Love it or hate it, the iPad is definitely an important device, that will change how media is consumed, and it will be interesting to see what Canadian content is available at launch next month. Although a Canadian date had not been specifically confirmed all the rumours prior to Wednesday pointed to an April 24th…
