2001 in 2010: a film review

Saw “2001:a space odyssey” at the TIFF Lightbox last night . The print is near pristine and this really is a “must see” item. Some thoughts; 1- Helvetica is a beautiful font and should be revived whenever possible. 2-Hal 9000 or Richard III; who is is the biggest jerk? 3-Hal 9000 or Norman Bates; who is the sickest puppy? 4-I can see (hear) why György Ligeti sued Kubrick for the way he had “Atmospheres” mixed in the soundtrack- that’s a lot of reverb there Stanley. I’m suprised that you didn’t…

Mobile Flash’s Growing Pains

I’ve recently commented on the lack of games on Android and thought that the Android market could use a good tower defense game. Of course, it would be nice to make money on my side projects, so I thought it would be really good to port my game to iOS and other modern devices, maximizing my potential market and ideally, selling a lot more games. The problem is that me and a friend working on a game don’t have the time, energy or mental fortitude to port our game to…

Microsoft Security Essentials 2 released – Your PC will thank you

If you haven’t yet installed Microsoft Security Essentials on your PC yet, now is the time.  Microsoft has released version 2 of their antivirus and malware protection software, and it’s probably the best solution out there for most people.  Even better is that it’s free. I’ve always hated antivirus software, because of the bloat it adds to the system.  Most commercial antivirus does a great job of delivering pop-ups for innocuous events, just to remind you that they’re still running, and to say “Hey, don’t you feel glad you bought me?”….

Medal of Honor: EA’s Lucky Rabbit’s Foot

Spoiler warning: Campaign spoilers for Medal of Honor, including end-game material. You’ve been warned. What a difference a year makes, you might think. Ever since Konami unceremoniously dumped Six Days in Fallujah, a shooter set in a very real, war-torn Iraq, gaming writers and pundits have raised the question of whether video games will ever be ready to tackle difficult subjects, even when those subjects seem to fit neatly into standard gaming contexts, like the chronicle of a military conflict. Of course, a lot of the controversy over Six Days…

At the TIFF Lightbox with the Hand Eye Society

The Hand Eye Society held the Arcadian Renaissance a while back TIFF Bell Lightbox.  On hand was a bank of arcade cabinets loaded with a number of great indie games, no quarters required .  The main event of the evening was an exciting, big-screen NIDHOGG tournament. Every time I see or play NIDHOGG,  I just wish I had it at home.  It’s a 150 proof distillation of 1 on 1 competitive gaming.  rgbFilter.com was on scene…

18 Games Worth Playing From 2010

Whether you’re a casual gamer or consider yourself hardcore, there’s no doubt that 2010 was a busy year, regardless of your system(s) of choice.  Last week I asked the crew here at RGB Filter to send me a list with a few of their top recommendations, whether they were blockbusters or something the mainstream may have missed.  The goal wasn’t to come up with a Top Ten or pick Game Of The Year, as such awards are about as relevant to the intrinsic quality of a game as winning Best…

Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood – polished to near perfection

Before jumping into the review of Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, here’s a little backstory.  If you haven’t played the first two games, and are one of those “don’t offend my eyes with spoilers” type, you’ve been forewarned.  Just skip ahead to where it says “The review” and you’ll be fine.  Some of this just isn’t going to make sense. A quick backstory The original Assassin’s Creed is a science fiction game, in which modern day bartender Desmond Miles is kidnapped by a company called Abstergo and strapped to a machine called…

Windows Phone 7 Marketplace… on the cheap

Who ever said the the best things in life are free might have been on to something especially if they were talking about the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. Before you get too excited I’m not saying everything in the Marketplace is free but there’s enough free and trial content to keep you more than busy. I’ve had my new LG Quantum running Windows Phone 7 for a couple of weeks now and despite a few minor deficiencies, that hopefully will be addressed in the next update, I have to admit…

Gateway DX4840-15c: a desktop for some of us

So you’re wondering, “Why is rgbFilter running a review of a desktop system?” As devout proponents of nomadic computing why should we even consider these anachronistic mainframe-wannabe boat anchors? Why? Because. Because we are fans of that implausible trinity, the Good, the Fast and the Cheap. This one came very close. I’m going to be a little sorry to see this review model sent back to its maker. Here’s a quick look at what it has inside: Processor Type: Intel Core i5 650- Dual Core Processor Speed: 3.2GHz RAM: 6GB…

exp. – You should be reading this

Mathew Kumar has proven time and again to have a unique insight not only video games, but what it is to be a writer whose main focus is games. We first talked to him at TCAF 2010, where he was selling exp., a printed ‘zine format video game periodical that really breaks the mold when it comes to games journalism.  He also delivered a keynote speech at GamerCamp this year that was both funny and biting, and one of my personal highlights of the day. He also announced that he…

Disney Epic Mickey: Not quite Disney World

For a while before it’s announcement legendary game designer Warren Spector – who has worked on classic hits such as the Ultima series, Thief, and Deus Ex – was rumored to be working on a new franchise with a new team.  That game turned out being Disney Epic Mickey for the Wii. For a licensed game with a big name behind it there has been a lot of high hopes that this would add to the list of great exclusive 2010 releases for the console. Unfortunately, after spending quite a…
