CRTC launches public consultation on internet and telephony

Last Friday, the CRTC launched a new public consultation to get feedback from Canadians on their telephone and internet services.  Being cynical about the impact of such a public consultation, especially one with the title Obligation to Serve, would be the easy approach, given some of the CRTC’s past decisions regarding internet services.  I’ll try not to be though, and suggest that everyone visit the public page and speak their mind. You can catch the full announcement after the break…

Hydro Thunder Hurricane review

For those who may not recall, Hydro Thunder was a Midway Games sit down style arcade speedboat racing game from 1999.  It also spawned versions for the Dreamcast, N64, Playstation and the PC, though I’m only familiar with the arcade version, which probably still haunts more than one Dave & Busters outlet across North America.  Though I haven’t played it in years, it certainly delivered on over-the-top speedboat racing back in the day. Now, Vector Unit, a small developer, has resurrected the franchise for Microsoft Game Studios as Hydro Thunder…

Samsung Galaxy S coming to Telus too?

UPDATE – According to MobileSyrup, the Telus Galaxy in question is actually going to be the mid-range Galaxy Apollo. Hopes dashed. When Samsung announced the launch in Canada of the Galaxy S ‘Superphone’, on Bell, they also said that “Canadian consumers can anticipate the release of additional Galaxy S smartphones throughout the rest of 2010.” Well, it looks like Telus might be the first carrier to have one of these ‘additional’ Galaxy S phones. On Howard Forums, one of the internet’s best discussion groups for phone geeks, the image above…

Walking Dead trailer from San Diego Comic Con

The makers of The Walking Dead TV series, on AMC, screened the first official trailer at the San Diego Comic Con this year, and at least one person in attendance managed to record it and put it up on YouTube. Though it’s a cam, the trailer holds up and it looks like they’re getting everything right. Also AMC posted some great pictures today from Comic-Con, where the show and cast made a big splash. You can check them out here. Lastly you can catch AMC’s The Walking Dead Motion Comic…

A Life Well Wasted, gaming radio done right

A Life Well Wasted is the brainchild of former Computer Gaming World, Game for Windows Magazine contributor, and member of the legendary 1up GFW Radio podcast (you can find a ‘best of’ here), Robert Ashley. After the demise of the ‘old’ 1up, and the end of GFW Radio, he decided to continue keep that show’s legacy and high-standards, alive by producing his own podcast. However, unlike GFW Radio, A Life Well Wasted is not a roundtable discussion style show, but more akin to the kind of radio shows found on…

The Amiga would have been 25 today

The Commodore 64 may have been the first computer to sell over one million units, but it was June 24th, 1985 when Commodore debuted the Amiga 1000, a computer that was, for all intents and purposes way ahead of the computing curve.  Computer stores in shopping malls across North America and Europe loved showcasing the now classic “Amiga Ball” as evidence of the power under the hood of this high end machine.  Over the next 10 years and multiple iterations, the Amiga computer proved to be a versatile creative tool,…

Scott Pilgrim Launch Party report and pictures

On Monday night we attended the Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour (vol.6) Launch Party, and while I knew that the comic was popular, I didn’t expect to see so many people crowding Markham Street, waiting for the book, and their hero, Bryan Lee O’Malley to sign it. If you are not too familiar with Scott Pilgrim, it is a manga inspired-comic set in Toronto, starring the titular Scott Pilgrim and his efforts to win, and keep, his dream girl, Ramona Flowers by battling her seven ‘evil exes’. Since the first issue…

Panasonic’s New FZ100 Digital Compact Camera

Panasonic has just announced the release of some new fixed-lens point-and-shoot digital cameras (hmmm… we must be getting close to the Photokina trade show).  With the exception of the new Lumix DMC-LX5, all their new cameras have been given the ability to shoot in full HD (1920×1080) using the AVCHD codec.  Of particular interest is the FZ100 which has been given one very interesting feature…

Router exploit leaves millions vulnerable

One of the biggest problems with computer security has to do with password protection.  Although it took a few years, most users are now smart enough to make sure they have proper password protection both on their computers and their WiFi, but a new variation of an old exploit appears to leave a wide range of consumer grade routers vulnerable to attack The exploit, reported by Ars Technica, and to presented at the Black Hat security conference as “How to Hack Millions of Routers”, is a new take on an…
