Windows Phone 7 MIX 2010 impressions

Microsoft officially announced Windows Phone 7 Series (WP7S) back at Mobile World Congress this past February, but a lot of details were left out.  Now that the MIX developers conference has wrapped up, there’s a lot more to pour through, from 3rd party development to multitasking and much more. In short, there’s a lot of good new ideas in the new OS, but there are also some drawbacks, especially if you consider yourself a power user.

Ben Heck’s Bill Paxton Pinball

Ben Heck is well known as a game console modder, arguably THE most well known console modder.  He’s worked on dozens of projects, ranging from crafting a portable Atari 2600 that uses full cartridges all the way up to a portable version of the PS2 and multiple versions of an Xbox 360 laptop.  The latest creation is less about portability though, and more about the coolness of one of geekdom’s favourite actors, Bill Paxton… Since 2005 I have been working on building my own custom pinball machine and now it…

Crysis 2 trailer from GDC 10

“Does it play Crysis?” is almost on its way out as a meme. That’s because Crytek has shown off Crysis 2 at GDC this year, with a not-surprisingly stunning video showing off the capabilities of not only the game, but the latest iteration of the underlying engine, CryEngine 3. Even though the footage is from a cam put up by gametrailers.com, it looks spectacular, especially since a lot of the footage is labeled as being rendered by the console version. The game is coming out later this year for the…

Prince Of Persia: The Forgotten Sands gameplay video

The new Prince of Persia, due out in May, helps fill in the seven year gap between The Sands Of Time and Warrior Within, as seen in the new trailer, which has both gameplay footage and developer commentary. From the looks of it, it’s very much in the Warrior Within vein design-wise. Interesting to note that to build the game, Ubisoft Montreal made use of their in-house Anvil engine, which allows for up to 50 enemies on screen at one time. Besides the classic parkour style action, there’s some new…

Chrome OS due out by end of 2010

Google CEO Eric Schmidt, while speaking at the Abu Dhabi Media Summit, announced that Google’s Chrome OS is still under construction, and on track to be released in the second half of this year. Chrome OS is a lightweight Linux based OS that uses the Google Chrome web browser as the main interface, and is geared towards lower end computing, such as netbooks and devices that make use of the mobile-geared ARM processors.. When Google announced Chrome, I admit that I was a little skeptical largely based on the usability…

OnLive US launch set for June

Remember OnLive, the cloud gaming service that promises to handle all the computational power of video gaming at their servers, requiring only a browser plug-in (Windows & Mac) or MicroConsole? Yesterday OnLive announced that the service will officially launch for US consumers (well, the 48 contiguous States) starting June 17th during the E3 2010 show. Access to the service is $14.95 a month, although that’s on top of game rentals or purchases. There will also be lower prices if you sign up for multi-month plans, though details haven’t been announced…

OpenGL 4.0 is here and ready to compute

Announced today at the 2010 Games Developers Conference, the latest version of OpenGL is available to developers for use. A cross-platform system for rendering graphics, OpenGL and it’s variants, such as OpenGL|ES for mobile devices, basically deliver the 3D goods on just about any platform. OpenGL 4.0 builds on past iterations, offloading more geometry and lighting tasks to the graphics processor.  One of the biggest impacts that end users will see is battery life on mobile devices such as smartphones and notebook computers when using 3D applications.  Normally ‘3D applications’  would mean…

Full 3D gaming on Microsoft’s Windows Phone demoed

Engadget managed to get a hands on of a couple of Windows Phone 7 games built with XNA Game Studio 4.0. Although they weren’t allowed to take any video of the games in action, they said it did work, including unlocking achievements. The more impressive of the two was a top down sci-fi looking dungeon crawler called The Harvest, running at the full 800×480 Windows Phone 7 resolution. The other is called Battle Punks and is a one-on-one fighting game. Although there’s no in-game action of either, they did post…

New Canadian Video Game Awards coming this spring

The 1st Annual Canadian Videogame and Digital Arts Awards is set to take place May 5th at the Vancouver Convention Centre and will in essense kick off GDC Canada.  This is definitely a good thing, as with the ELANs moving from Canada to the US, there’s definitely room for an awards show that highlights Canadian talent, be it big names in the gaming industry such as Bioware or Ubisoft Montreal, or the wealth of talent behind the scenes of film and television.  A number of sponsor such as Microsoft and…

New TRON Legacy trailer awakens ancient geek slumber

This is the new TRON: Legacy trailer. It’s very cool. There’s little else to say. … Actually, there is. It IS very cool looking, other than the Mouse House logo at the beginning. The stream above is courtesy of Joystiq, because although Disney put an HD version on YouTube, they disabled embedding. Way to grok the 21st century. Apparently this trailer also played before the 3D Disney release of Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland this weekend.  From anecdotal evidence, the trailer was the best part of the experience.
