OnLive US launch set for June

Remember OnLive, the cloud gaming service that promises to handle all the computational power of video gaming at their servers, requiring only a browser plug-in (Windows & Mac) or MicroConsole? Yesterday OnLive announced that the service will officially launch for US consumers (well, the 48 contiguous States) starting June 17th during the E3 2010 show. Access to the service is $14.95 a month, although that’s on top of game rentals or purchases. There will also be lower prices if you sign up for multi-month plans, though details haven’t been announced…

New Canadian Video Game Awards coming this spring

The 1st Annual Canadian Videogame and Digital Arts Awards is set to take place May 5th at the Vancouver Convention Centre and will in essense kick off GDC Canada.  This is definitely a good thing, as with the ELANs moving from Canada to the US, there’s definitely room for an awards show that highlights Canadian talent, be it big names in the gaming industry such as Bioware or Ubisoft Montreal, or the wealth of talent behind the scenes of film and television.  A number of sponsor such as Microsoft and…

Eric Cartman and Lady Gaga – together?

As anyone who plays Rock Band knows, Harmonix has consistently put out new tracks every week for over two years, and have branched out into other musical genres.  This may be the first time in it’s history that both an original artist and cover have seen the same track released simultaneously though.  Lady Gaga makes her debut on Rock Band March 16th, with a track pack that includes “Poker Face”.  At the same time, for those who like a little irony in their Rock Band list, you’ll be able to…

Portal 2 becomes a reality, and OSX support is not a lie.

In 2008, on Doug’s suggestion, I picked up a copy of the year-old Orange Box for the 360 on a whim. (Said whim was spurred on by Doug’s claim that if I didn’t buy it, there was something seriously wrong with me.) Turns out, he was right, as Orange Box was my first foray into the world of Valve, and from there, Steam, thanks to the brilliant PC version of Left For Dead. Orange Box spends very little time on my shelf, as I quickly found myself addicted to HL2…

Don’t turn on your PS3 for now: UPDATE – fixed

The widespread PS3 errors have been narrowed down, as expected, to a clock-related bug, at least that’s what Sony believes. In short, if you own an older “phat” PS3 (aka not the Slim), Sony is recommending that you do not turn on the console at all untill they announce a fix. So if you were planning on heading home today and firing up Heavy Rain, Bioshock 2, or watch a BluRay, you’re going to have to hold out just a little bit longer. We believe we have identified that this…

PS3 outage a leap year bug?

Late yesterday, reports started appearing across the social networks and message boards of PS3 owners losing trophy information and the console being unable to play game discs. At first it was suspected that this was due to an outage of the Playstation Network (PSN). Most users reported getting the 8001050F error code, and even booting up without a network connection doesn’t alleviate the problem. As more info has leaked out, it appears the problem is limited to the older ‘phat’ PS3 models, as PS3 Slim users haven’t noticed the same…

Pure Pwnage on the big screen

Really, the image says it all, but even with the switch from hit web series to TV show, the gang at Pure Pwnage are keeping the premiere screening tradition alive. You can catch the first 3 episodes of the new TV show on the big screen at the Bloor Cinema (that’s in Toronto for the n00bs, which is in Canada for uber n00bs), on Saturday March 20th starting at 6:30pm.   The first 2 episodes will have aired on Showcase by then, which means you’ll be getting to see the 3rd…

Metro 2033 using DirectX 11, looks awesome

It’s not very often that the technical quality of a video game’s screen shots make it worth discussing, but these shots of THQ and 4AG’s Metro 2033 warrants it.  THQ recently put out some new screens of the game rendered using Nvidia video cards with DirectX 11 support, and the results are stunning. The sci-fi shooter takes place in a post apocalyptic Russia, and will be coming out on multiple platforms, but I think it’s safe to say if you have a PC rig capable of playing Metro 2033 with…

Mass Effect 2 review

Before jumping into the proper review, let’s get one thing out of the way.  If you haven’t yet played the first Mass Effect, you will be missing something from Mass Effect 2.  In the same way that The Empire Strikes Back is a better movie than Star Wars, not seeing the first just takes away from the overall experience.  Sure you can jump right in, and it won’t hurt the enjoyment, but if you watch them both, it’s a richer experience.  Sure, in the case of Mass Effect, that’s a…

Bioshock 2, Darwinia+ out this week

It’s February, so you know it’s that time of year when ‘big’ games rarely get released.  Except that 2K’s Bioshock 2 launches tomorrow on the Xbox 360, PS3 and Windows.  Continuing (sort of) the story from the original Bioshock, the sequel will also bring Rapture-themed multiplayer variant to the franchise, thanks to London Ontario game studio Digital Extremes. Also launching this week on XBLA is Darwinia+, the console version of award winning, genre-bending Darwinia.  You can catch the trailer for that

Xbox Live going 360 exclusive

According to a letter today from  Marc Whitten, GM of Xbox Live, the original Xbox is definitely looking at it’s sunset months, at least when it comes to online gaming.  Support for the original Xbox on the Live service will end on April 15th, 2010.   This includes both original titles compatible with the 360 and the downloadable Xbox Originals games. This doesn’t affect the single player experience, as it affects the multiplayer gaming aspect. The largest groups of people to be affected are fans of Halo 2 and Counter Strike….

The videogame history timeline

It’s not the first time someone has done a timeline for videogames, but the videogame history timeline is the best I’ve seen.  It’s a new project from designer Mauricio Giraldo Arteaga, and dates all the way back to Charles Babbage.  One of the nicest features is the top bar which not only has a search function, but has a series of tags that let you customize what information is viewable (person, technology, business, console, accessory, game, cultural, other).  It’s still in beta, but it’s looking good to me. via [Toronto…
