Human evolutionary ‘tree’ reveals why video games suck

Scientific American has posted a Hominin evolutionary tree, which is interesting, if for no other reason, then for the way they posted it — via the publishers of effortlessly zoomable online documents, issuu.com. The science is fascinating, but I’m more intrigued by this new method of online presentation than by the magazine artist’s visual rendering of evolution. Ever notice the way the living Hominins (i.e. you and me) will consistently squash any inconveniently branching structure into a linear one of their choosing, as if that is a good way to…

From Me to Wii

Yes, it’s true I am not the target demographic. However, for the first time in my life I feel like I belong in the big bad world of gaming. Although it dates me, my introduction to gaming was over 25 years ago. It was Christmas 1982, and I knew something big was about to happen. The camera came out, and everyone gathered around to watch my younger brother and I open our big gifts. I started to tear into the paper, but before I had unwrapped enough to see what…

Guitar Hero: World Tour wants you to be a real Rock Ban…um, musician.

Logitech is taking a step into the Real Zone with their Premiere Edition guitar for Guitar Hero: World Tour. This Premiere Edition peripheral features a wooden neck, rosewood fingerboard, metal frets, metal tuning pegs, a one-piece contoured shape and crimson body. More importantly, for us at least, are quiet buttons – using some noise-reducing rubber keyboard technology – and a touch-sensitive neck slider. (eurogamer)

Blu Ray not coming to Xbox 360 after all, because, apparently, you don’t want it.

Doth Microsoft protest too much? Last week we reported on a rumour stating that the Xbox 360 would be getting its own Blu Ray player by as early as the end of this year. And there was much rejoicing. But Microsoft has again banished that rumour to way outside the Garden of Things I Actually Want, and reminded all of us, the consumers, that you bought your 360 to play GAMES on, not watch movies. As we’ve said before, Microsoft has no plans to introduce an Xbox 360 Blu-ray add-on….

Forget button-mashing or Wiimote-waggling; The future of gaming is all in your head

The Tokyo Game Show in Japan wrapped up last Sunday, leaving in its wake a a record 879 new titles and updates designed to please pretty much everyone. Nintendo is a perennial no-show at TGS, but that didn’t stop developers from debuting a slew of games for the DS. In fact, the number of DS games debuted topped the list of titles for any platform. Perhaps not surprisingly, the next strongest showing was for mobile phone games. Despite this year’s lame theme, “Ready for GAME time” (I guess the title…

Xbox 360 To Get Blu-Ray Player?

As we’ve discussed before, Blu Ray is not making the kinds of inroads Sony was predicting by this point in the game, but if the latest rumour is to be believed, the consumer electronics giant may be getting a leg up from it’s console competitor, Microsoft. Xbit Labs is reporting that Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology Corp (yep, HD-DVD’s Toshiba) has been contracted to make an external Blu Ray player for the Xbox 360, and that the target price is aiming to be $100 – $150 US. It is still unclear when…

Laroquodic Photo Journal: Fan Expo 2008

As some of you know (especially those who visited — thanks!) I had a table in Artist’s Alley at Fan Expo 2008 in Toronto. I took over 4000 photographs at this event in less than three days, and there are a lot of gems. Some of which I’m saving, of course, for future episodes of Hypothesis. But others, I’ve managed to assemble into a sort of photo journal of my experiences as an exhibitor, with commentary… VIEW PHOTO ESSAY

rgbFilter – Pure Pwnage Coverage – Show Notes

Well, there’s not a lot of links in these show notes, unless you’ve never seen Pure Pwnage before.  If you haven’t, it’s just about the coolest online show out there.  While Ryan and I were drinking it up at Beer Fest (an annual tradition that goes back a few years), Dave went to the premiere of the shows 17th and 18th episode for Season two. Besides some great fans, and an awesome interview with Jarett Cale (aka Jeremy), there’s a surprise or two buried in there, including a proposal.  Now…
