Xbox, Vista, Playstation, iTunes, Wii spawn mutant 5-headed baby, dub it “The New Xbox Experience”

One of the things launched at E3 this week is a brand new dashboard for the XBOX 360, so far dubbed “The New XBOX experience”. Not a great deal is known about it, and precious few (if any) have had actual hands-on experience with it, but if Larry Hryb (XBOX’s very own “Major Nelson”) is to be believed, it’s gonna be, like, totally rad. One look at the new interface and I beg to differ. The UI appears to add nothing new to the gaming universe, and appears in fact…

Sony follows Microsoft’s lead and also gives Canadians the finger

[UPDATE – In an article on the gloabeandmail.com Matt Levitan, marketing and PR representative for PlayStation Canada is quoted as saying – “It’s a top priority for us to get it up as quickly as possible” How soon that is remains to be seen] On Tuesday Sony held their E3 press conference, and just like Microsoft they, too, now have downloadable movies available through their Playstation Store. This is not a deal with a third party, like Netflix, but something more akin to what has been available on the Xbox…

Rock Band 2 On Display

Engadget has a first look at the new Rock Band 2 gear, with plenty of pics. The guitars have a new optical sensor to make syncing with your TV much easier, and it also includes a look at the awesome Ion drum kit. Rock Band 2 is going to be fully compatible with downloaded content from the original game, and is more of an evolution than a revolution, but I have to say it appears to be evolving in the right direction. The new game come with 200 tracks, including…

Game developer Ubisoft has purchased Montreal special effects house Hybride Technologies. According to their announcement (which I would link to here, but it’s embedded in Hybride’s flash based site): “The future of our industry depends on our ability to create brands that captivate customers and to extend our brands to other forms of entertainment,” said Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer at Ubisoft. “This alliance is a true first for the industry,” said Yannis Mallat, Ubisoft Montreal CEO. “Ubisoft and Hybride share the same vision of entertainment convergence and a common…

Should Alex Get an Xbox 360?

One of the regular segments on the podcast is about video games.  Although he and his fiancée own a Wii, Alex is a straight up PC gamer.  I’ve know him for well over a decade, and he’s always kind of looked down on console gaming. While taping the game segment each week, Alex seems to have an internal debate.  You can see his eyes glaze over, and he starts muttering that maybe he SHOULD buy an Xbox 360.  He then comes out of his hypnogogic trance, gets all rational, and…

MS to slash the price of the XBOX 360?

The internet Gaming community is all-a-buzz with rumours of a possible price drop on Microsoft’s gaming console, posted by the Hollywood Reporter. If true, the price on the 20gb PRO console will drop by $50, bringing it down to $299 US (from $349). Again, this can only be classified as rumour, but if it is true, then it appears that MS is already positioning themselves as the console to beat this holiday season. And with titles like Gears of War 2, Rock Band 2, and Guitar Hero World Tour already…

Blizzard (finally) announces Diablo III and will try to pry that console controller from your hands

After a week of wild rumors sparked by the gradually evolving teaser image that Blizzard posted for the 2008 Paris Invitational event, it was announced today that yes, everyone was correct. Diablo III is coming out ‘when it’s done’. They are not straying too far from the 3rd-person, isometric view, hack and slash gameplay of the first 2 games. Of course they have updated the tech to today’s standards, and if the videos posted online are any indication, the final game looks like it’s going to be a beautiful action-packed…
