AMD ‘Officially’ Launches Radeon 4870, declares cinema dead.

In a previous post Doug mentioned the spiffy ‘real-time rendered’ animation AMD (ATI) showed at a press event, declaring it the birth of ‘Cinema 2.0’. Hyperbole aside this week AMD has annnounced their new ‘King’ of graphics cards, the Radeon 4870. Ringing in at the $300 USD range it is certainly a much better buy than the new Nvidia GTX 280 launched last week, at $650! However unlike the Nvidia card the 4870 is not available in stores yet (due at the end of June), whereas the GTX 280 could…

Metal Gear Solid 4 via Zero Punctuation

Yahtzee’s Zero Punctuation reviews are NEVER safe for work. Even if you’re not a gamer, they’re always worth watching. In the latest one, he talks MGS4, succinctly compiling all the criticisms of the game in one juicy little nugget, and stripping out all the gushing fanboyism that’s required of many gamings sites that are more concerned about their advanced copies and advertising revenue than their journalistic integrity.

AMD’s Next Gen Graphics Card

Shortly after the details of Nvidia’s new chipset leaked out, AMD’s demoed their new RV770 chipset. The short clip above is real-time game play using their Ruby character and was rendered by a single PC equipped with two “RV770” codenamed graphics cards powered by an AMD Phenom™ X4 9850 Processor and AMD 790FX Chipset. AMD is planning on introducing the RV770 ‘this summer’, along with a more detailed demo of it’s capabilities. Though the ‘consumer-level’ card is clearly aimed at gamers, I can’t help but wonder how it’ll perform when…

GTA IV Release

Grand Theft Auto IV could possibly beat Halo 3’s record smashing one day media cash cow extravaganza, especially when GTA IV has been released on both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 on the same day. Halo 3 took in $300 million in one day, and GTA IV is estimated to top $400 million. Some pretty cool pics from the Toronto GTA IV pre-release event. Post photo courtesy of wv on flickr, who’s got a couple of more cool pics to boot.

Hadron Collider Injunction Sought – Head Crab Fears

With the construction complete on CERNs Large Hadron Collider, two men have sought an injuction in a Hawaiian court to prevent them flicking the switch, out of safety concerns. The two major concerns are the possibility of creating small scale black holes that could suck up the earth, or the creation of strangelets that could theoretically convert us all into matter straight out of a Kurt Vonnegut novel (or possibly “Plan 9 From Outer Space”). Though the chances of either of these senarious actually playing out is essentially zero, it…

The PS3’s Number One Flaw Fixed, Sold Out

It would have been cheap as sin to include an infrared sensor in the PS3, but Sony opted not to include it. Until now, PS3 owners have had to control their Blu Ray movie playback using the game controller, even if the rest of their home theatre setup was being managed by a remote that cost more than the PS3 itself. The other option was to add dongles, or buy the PS3 specific Bluetooth remote control, both pretty inelegant solutions, and still meant you had to get up off the…

Halo 3 “Believe” behind the scenes

If you haven’t been paying attention, what is probably the most anticipated video game of the year launches in less than 24 hours. Microsoft has been gearing up the marketing blitz for Halo 3 for the Xbox 360. The “Believe” campaign is interesting in that they opted to built a real world diorama depicting a massive battle. In the spot, a camera pans through this frozen battle, complete with explosions. The work that Method Studios put into the building of the set is phenomenal, which included building a complete CG…
