Duke’s back, Hail to the King – lines courtesy of Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, John Carpenter & Roddy Piper

Now that Duke Nukem is back in the public eye, perhaps Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, John Carpenter, and Roddy Piper should consider taking action to ensure that they are properly credited in the new game for the lines ‘appropriated’ from Army of Darkness and They Live…(oh and Scarface). Check out a clip from They Live after the break.

Machete – film review

Warning: The following contains mild spoilers. Machete is a damn good movie. I mean, I’m not asking anyone to be surprised by this, I’m just saying.  It’s Robert Rodriguez directing a cast that includes Robert De Niro, Stephen Seagal, Cheech Marin, and Danny effin’ Trejo in exactly the kind of over the top brutal action extravaganza that Rodriguez specializes in. Of course, it’s also a movie based on a trailer that was created before the idea of actually doing the movie appeared to ever have been seriously considered.  For those…

Fan Expo 2010 – Pressure valve

As we briefly touched on in our initial Fan Expo write up, the convention was overcrowded this year, with attendance up by about 10,000 people.  It didn’t help that Expo was moved from the larger south building of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, to the north, which has approximately 20% LESS square footage. The intention of Hobbystar all along was to keep it in the south building.  After all, Fan Expo moved from the north to the south a few years back precisely because of increasing attendance.  This year, however,…

Movies Coming To A Theatre Beside You

The folks at “io9”, a very hip geek-site, published some painfully funny and astute poster art by Sean Hartter. The premise is sci-fi movie posters from an alternate timeline. His graphic chops are top drawer and his concept is, like any good alternate reality story, better than merely plausable. My Philip K. Dick circuit got a workout on these but it was the my inner film geek that was most delighted…the man knows his history. What he’s proposing isn’t that far from the truth. Take the David Lynch version  of…

Fan Expo 2010 – The Big Crunch

With the end of the last weekend of August comes the end of Fan Expo, by far the largest gathering of fans from across the geek spectrum in Canada, and third largest in North America. 2010 also marks the third year that we at RGB Filter have stormed the gates with video cameras and mics in hand to interview artists, writers, game designers and the occasional geek celebrity, meaning that I’m personally looking at about 6 hours of footage to pour through. One of the consistent highlights of Fan Expo…

Canon Announces New 60D DSLR

In the midst of all the spotlight Nikon and Sony have been getting lately, Canon has chimed in and officially announced their new 60D DSLR a couple days ago.  Sitting in between the Rebel T2i and the 7D, the 60D looks to have taken it’s cues more from the Rebel series than it’s predecessor, the 50D.  Sporting a smaller plastic body, the 60D offers an 18 MP APS-C sensor, FULL HD support of 1080p at 24/25/30 fps and 720p at 50/60 fps, high speed still shooting at 5.3 fps, and…

Rubber – film review

“The film you are about to see is an homage to ‘no reason’, that most powerful element of style.” This is the manifesto that opens Rubber, delivered directly to the audience in a breaking of the fourth wall that is somewhat like taking a pound of dynamite to a pane of glass. Rubber is a “horror” film about a black rubber car tyre that kills people by making their heads explode.  With telepathy. And when I say “horror” I do of course mean “side-splittingly funny, pitch black, absurdist comedy.” Screened…

Black Death – film review

In Black Death, screened this year at Toronto After Dark, Sean Bean plays a grizzled dark ages knight who leads a small band of Agincourt veterans, torturers and murderers, plus one world shy monk, on a mission to a investigate claims of a small village that is free from the plague, because a necromancer has been using Satanic power to keep the sickness at bay. Now, show of hands; how many of you gave out a little “squeeee!” at the words “Sean Bean” and “grizzled dark ages knight”? Good.  Go…

Sure he can act, but is he The Law?

It’s mainstream news that Karl Urban is going to attempt a reboot of Judge Dredd. This would appear to be cut-and-dry-feel-good kinda story however here are some things to keep in mind. 1. Yes, he is a better actor than Sly but can he scowl? At present a thorough search of the Interweb was unable to find an image of Mr. Urban scowling, sneering or even grimacing. 2. He has gone on record as  saying that he will keep the helmet on. Bravo. Now we know he can eyebrow lift…

The Last Exorcism review

When going into The Last Excorcism, which played Monday night at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival, I wasn’t sure what to expect.  I had seen the trailers, and at first blush it seemed to be treading the same ground as other documentary style horror films, from Blair Witch to Paranormal Activity, and it was also tackling the exorcism sub-genre that The Exorcist still holds the crown after almost 40 years earlier still holds the crown for.  All this, combined with the name Eli Roth, made me wary.  Though not…
