Xbox, Vista, Playstation, iTunes, Wii spawn mutant 5-headed baby, dub it “The New Xbox Experience”

One of the things launched at E3 this week is a brand new dashboard for the XBOX 360, so far dubbed “The New XBOX experience”. Not a great deal is known about it, and precious few (if any) have had actual hands-on experience with it, but if Larry Hryb (XBOX’s very own “Major Nelson”) is to be believed, it’s gonna be, like, totally rad. One look at the new interface and I beg to differ. The UI appears to add nothing new to the gaming universe, and appears in fact…

Just a little love for our iFriends

this is just a very quick blurb toeveryone who was at the iPhone launch on July 11 who helped make it such a great event. I’ll be posting something a little more in-depth tomorrow about the vibe, the ups and downs, some of the more memorable moments, and how a quick trip to the mall completely saved the day. That’ll be tomorrow. Now, I must sleep. Cheers 🙂 Ps: this post written on my shiny new iPhone 🙂

The Great Canadian Telecom Duopoly roundup

Yep.  It’s the semi-weekly Great Canadian Telecom (GCT) Roundup, taking a look at what’s happened in Bell and Rogers are doing lately (this week there’s some bonus Telus news). To start it off, the Montreal Gazette is reporting (in a story who’s title “Consumers r skrood by ph compnEz – agn” can be considered either a painful attempt at 1337 speak, or a dig (not digg) at the literacy rate amongst internet users, that Bell and Telus are considering charging customers per sms received starting in August, with speculation that…

Rogers offers Unlimited-ish Data Plan for iPhone 3G.

Hot off the Interwebz, Rogers is now offering a promotional $30/month Data plan for the iPhone 3G. $30/month will get you 6 GB of data (ED Note: for phones purchased on or before Aug 31st) You can add the $30 data plan to any existing plan. If you think that’s still a little tight, consider that AT&T’s advertised “unlimited data” plan actually includes a 5gb “soft cap“, meaning customers who go over that amount may be subject to additional fees. The intention is to avoid people thethering their phones and…

CONFIRMED: Apple Retail Stores in Canada NOT carrying the iPhone

Apple officially announced today that it would not be carrying the iPhone in Canadian apple stores, finally putting to rest countless rumours and speculative blog posts regarding the device’s Canadian availability. Speculation on whether or not the iPhone would be sold in Apple’s stores ran the gamut from vague curiosity to rumours of an Apple power play to divert an allotment of iPhone stock destined for Canada to Europe.

Canadians to Broadcasters: “I want my Web TV”

In a recent study, it seems that more and more Canadians are turning to the Internets for their boobtube fix. But if you’re among them, and if you’re a fan of virtually anything not available on Canada’s major networks, and even then if that content is U.S. produced and not licensed for any distribution beyond your living room screen, odds are you’re getting your shows via non-sanctioned means.

Is the Canadian Wireless landscape ready for a change? Instinct says “maybe”.

As has been posted before, Rogers is not the only game in town when it comes to putting the internet in your pocket. The CDMA HTC Touch does the job remarkably well, and very affordably. But can it be called an iPhone Killer? Well, the jury’s kind of out on that, and the fact that it’s the only touch screen comparable wireless device available in Canada (either through Bell or Telus) keeps your options pretty slim. But as was inevitable, a whole slew of new devices is poised to flood…

Why Did Xandros Acquired Linspire?

Linspire (nee Lindows OS) is a commercial Linux platform, originating on a Debian build, but later switching to Ubuntu.  The idea behind Linspire is to create a low cost Linux operating system that would have enhanced compatibility with Microsoft Windows applications, using CNR (click and run) technology.  Linspire based machines are generally found at big box retailers such as WalMart, which is known for it’s discount prices, and an essentially free OS helps keep the cost of computer systems down. Xandros is also part of the commercial Linux world, so…

Nvidia CUDA Toolkit Now Available

In the latest podcast, due to be online by tomorrow, we mentioned the imminent release of Nvidia’s CUDA.  CUDA is a C programming environment that allows programmers to use their graphics card’s processors to do computational tasks not neccessarily related to graphics rendering.  The toolkit is not only compatible with the new GTX series cards, but many of the 8xxx and 9xxx consumer cards from the company.  Click here for a full list of CUDA compatible cards.  It’s bigger than you think. Well, the CUDA Toolkit is now available for…

MS to slash the price of the XBOX 360?

The internet Gaming community is all-a-buzz with rumours of a possible price drop on Microsoft’s gaming console, posted by the Hollywood Reporter. If true, the price on the 20gb PRO console will drop by $50, bringing it down to $299 US (from $349). Again, this can only be classified as rumour, but if it is true, then it appears that MS is already positioning themselves as the console to beat this holiday season. And with titles like Gears of War 2, Rock Band 2, and Guitar Hero World Tour already…

Canada’s unfair data rates get international attention, believe it or not.

Anyone who has even taken a cursory glance at our main page will know that we’re what you might call a little irked over the ramrodding Canadians are taking if they want to purchase an iPhone from Rogers. In a nutshell, Rogers is offering half what AT&T is for more money, and a third what O2 in the UK is offering, also for significantly more money. It’s a grossly unfair monopolistic practice that can in no way represent what the “vast majority” of consumers want or need, and considering the…

F**k You Rogers becomes Ruined iphone, gets over 12000 signatures and counting

What probably started as what the creator thought might generate a few thousand signatures from Howardforums.com and iphoneincanada.ca readers has quickly snowballed over the weekend to be one of the week’s top tech stories, with one digg being the 12th highest overall digg in the past 7 days. What is more impressive to me is that this is a Canadian story, something that rarely gets much attention in the mostly US-centric tech news on the web. Ruinediphone.com now has (as of 6pm EST, June 29th) 12,725 signatures. Interestingly, as you…
