New Canadian Video Game Awards coming this spring

The 1st Annual Canadian Videogame and Digital Arts Awards is set to take place May 5th at the Vancouver Convention Centre and will in essense kick off GDC Canada.  This is definitely a good thing, as with the ELANs moving from Canada to the US, there’s definitely room for an awards show that highlights Canadian talent, be it big names in the gaming industry such as Bioware or Ubisoft Montreal, or the wealth of talent behind the scenes of film and television.  A number of sponsor such as Microsoft and…

New TRON Legacy trailer awakens ancient geek slumber

This is the new TRON: Legacy trailer. It’s very cool. There’s little else to say. … Actually, there is. It IS very cool looking, other than the Mouse House logo at the beginning. The stream above is courtesy of Joystiq, because although Disney put an HD version on YouTube, they disabled embedding. Way to grok the 21st century. Apparently this trailer also played before the 3D Disney release of Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland this weekend.  From anecdotal evidence, the trailer was the best part of the experience.

Attend SXSW virtually

Every spring, the SXSW music festival invades Austin Texas.  In the early days, it was purely a musical affair, but since then has also grown to include both film and interactive festivals that run more or less concurrently.  Twitter, for example, launched at SXSE interactive in 2007. As part of it’s musical side, artists both new and established have made MP3s available free to download from the SXSE website. In more recent years those files have been compiled by the public into a huge repository of RIAA safe torrent files….

Pure Pwnage on the big screen

Really, the image says it all, but even with the switch from hit web series to TV show, the gang at Pure Pwnage are keeping the premiere screening tradition alive. You can catch the first 3 episodes of the new TV show on the big screen at the Bloor Cinema (that’s in Toronto for the n00bs, which is in Canada for uber n00bs), on Saturday March 20th starting at 6:30pm.   The first 2 episodes will have aired on Showcase by then, which means you’ll be getting to see the 3rd…

Chew: A comic about a psychic cop, chicken, and the FDA

I used to buy a lot of comics, having a pull at my local comic store of anywhere between 5-10 floppies a week, but as the years have gone by I have a) become lot more selective in my choices, and b) decided to wait for trade paperbacks to come out, instead of buying single issues. It is only when something is very special that I still buy the floppies. Joining ‘The Walking Dead’, the greatest zombie story in any media, is ‘Chew’, one of the most original, funny, and…

Telus first Canadian mobile carrier to do DRM-free music

I haven’t looked at buying music from a mobile device in a long while, but would have figured that DRM free was now de rigueur.  Apparently not for purchasing over the air on your phone, at least in Canada.  Telus has announced today that they have launched a DRM-free over the air (OTA) service.   In short, as a Telus customer, you’ll be able to buy music directly on your phone (with free 30 second previews).  Once you have it there, since you’re free of those pesky rights management issues you…

TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a foundation known for its conferences devoted to what it calls ‘ideas worth spreading’. In November 2009 TEDxVancouver took place at the Electronic Arts Burnaby campus. The event’s theme was ‘Forever Young’, and one of the invited speakers was Neill Blomkamp, South African born Canadian, and Vancouver Film School trained, director of…

Pure Pwnage Production Shorts

As many of you may be aware, Pure Pwnage, the wildly popular Toronto based internet show has made the transition from the web to TV show, thanks to an eight episode deal with Showcase here in Canada. As part of the lead up to the premiere in March, they have started releasing a series of production shorts, the first three of which are already online. The shorts so far consist of Jeremy and FPS Doug dealing with acting classes and other requests made by the network.  Unfortunately, the clips can…

AMC TV greenlights ‘The Walking Dead’ Pilot

Last year it was announced that Robert Kirkman’s Image comic‘The Walking Dead’ had been optioned by AMC to be turned into a TV Series. This was great news for many. As an ongoing series on the cable network, it won’t be bound by the same FCC constrictions as the broadcast networks. This should hopefully lead to an authentic adaptation of what our friend Chris at Comics212 (and organizer of TCAF) says was one of the past decades best genre comics. On Wednesday the show took one more shamble closer to…

rgbFilter @ TCAF 2009 – Jamie McKelvie, Ray Fawkes & Alec Longstreth

Last May we attended the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, and got a chance to talk to a lot of the artists at the show. We posted 2 videos back in May, but a lot of the other interviews were put on the backburner, so, after a long delay, we will finally be posting the remaining videos, just in time to coincide with the announcement of TCAF 2010 guest list. In this video we talk to Jamie McKelvie, the artist, with writer Kieron Gillen, of Phonogram, Ray Fawkes, one half of…
