Toronto Comic Arts Festival 2010: Headlining guest is Dan Clowes

Unlike previous TCAFs, which were held bi-annually, TCAF 2009 is being followed by another festival this year. Like last year, it is being held at the Toronto Reference Library, and is on May 8th and 9th. The TCAF 2010 website will being going live on January 19th with the full guest list, but it was announced on Friday that the headlining guest will be Dan Clowes, an artist who rarely makes convention appearances. He also created the TCAF 2010 poster above. Clowes is well know for being the author, and…

Boxee Beta now public

As we’ve mentioned before, Boxee threw it’s hat into the settop box ring, and from the looks of what they’ve got on tap, it’s one of the better options. The announced Boxee Box hardware (made by DLink) will have HDMI out, and support 1080p video to your television, using the horsepower of Nvidia’s Tegra 2 chipset, and support a myriad of file formats, networked content and streams from online sources.   The cut off cube look is just begging for a “Weighted Companion Cube” mod,  and is actually small enough that…

2009 in review – rgb style

With 2009 a over week in the rear view mirror, we decided to take a look back at our favourite movies and games from the year, and present our top list.  Instead of picking THE best movie and game of the year, we all made individual lists, then I tallied them up.  Anything with more than one vote makes it on the list.

Boxee Beta and Box unveiled

I’m a huge fan of Boxee which is, outside of Windows Media Center, my favourite way to access media on my TV.  Boxee, a social networking aware media center, has been in alpha for a long time, and Monday night’s beta announcement marked the next step for the company that wants to be your media portal to the world. With the announcement of the beta program (chock full of screenshots), Boxee has been given a new look along with new functionality.  The menu system appears to have more polish, making…

Hello, Dexter Morgan

It’s rare that we discuss TV shows on rgbFilter, at least outside of the podcast, and even then the podcast leans more towards the science fiction.  Dexter is a worthy exception though. Now in it’s 4th season, Showtime’s Dexter follows the trials and tribulations of Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall), a blood splatter expert for the Miami police department, who also happens to be a serial killer.  As a child, his murderous tendencies were noticed by his police officer father, who taught him to channel his primal urges…

Bye bye, Big Bop

Yet another Toronto institution is closing its doors forever. In January of 2010, the iconic Big Bop will be no longer. Located at Queen and Bathurst, the Bop is the home of Kathedral, Holy Joe’s, and Reverb, and is known to many as a favourite venue for Toronto’s indie music scene. A cold wind seems to be blowing through Toronto’s west end these days. In the past year or so, we’ve seen a major stretch of Queen West’s historic district burned to the ground only to be replaced by a…

RED Scarlet: Film resolution for the rest of us?

The RED ONE camera has been around for a while now, showing it’s chops as a replacement for analog film for a couple of years.  Since then, Red also annouced two new cameras, including the Scarlet which is aimed squarely at the prosumer market. Well, the details are out thanks to the RED user forum, and although they added a little more ‘pro’ to the pricing than originally announced, the specs are pretty impressive.  The ‘all-in-one’ Scarlet fixed 8x lens and brain will be priced at $4750 (US).  This price…

“Rogers On Demand Online” – Hulu North or just another VOD?

We’ve talked about the lack of a Hulu-type service in Canada on a number of occasions.  In the US, Hulu is a free service that allows users to watch full TV episodes and movies from a number of content providers in an on-demand service on their computers, either via a web browser or dedicated client.  The service does contain advertising, but is less intrusive than watching over the air or cable broadcasts. Rogers announced that they have partnered with 15 network content providers to allow streaming of content from 19…

A look at Ninja Assassin: the title is not redundant.

‘Ninja Assassin’ isn’t trying to change the world.  It’s an over the top bloody ninja movie, capturing the sometimes cheesy feel of 80’s ninja movies, notably the Ninja series starring Sho Kosugi.  To that effect, it works very well.  The film takes every supernatural element applied to ninjas, and treats them as real, to the point where they actually disappear in shadows, and can heal themselves with the power of their own will, to sometimes spectacular effect. Before I go on with the review, I just want to clear something…
