Laroquodic Photo Journal: Fan Expo 2008

As some of you know (especially those who visited — thanks!) I had a table in Artist’s Alley at Fan Expo 2008 in Toronto. I took over 4000 photographs at this event in less than three days, and there are a lot of gems. Some of which I’m saving, of course, for future episodes of Hypothesis. But others, I’ve managed to assemble into a sort of photo journal of my experiences as an exhibitor, with commentary… VIEW PHOTO ESSAY

Apple vs. Art

It took the appalling spectacle of Apple trying to deny iPhone distribution to these artists at Murderdrome to draw my attention to Infurious Comics and their neat little enterprise. My willingness to try to distribute my own webcomic through the iPhone’s App Store will hinge on how Apple responds to criticisms like this one. I could be comfortable with an App Store-wide rating system that treats all media equally, but it would depend on whether it’s just a cloak for more censorship. (After all, nothing about having a rating system…

Fan Expo: Aaron Douglas Interview

Alex talks with Aaron Douglas, who plays Chief on Battlestar Galactica. It starts off as a mutual Ricky Gervais / Stephen Merchant / Karl Pilkington fan chat (Aaron want to work with them, hint hint), then turns to discussions about the announced BSG TV movie being directed by Edward James Olmos and his roles in The Bridge and Blood: A Butcher’s Tale and what it’s like to work on a fully green screened set. NOTE: This is a repost because the earlier version contained an error.

Fan Expo: Rick Green Interview

Ryan talks to Rick Green about the hilarious history of Hoverboy, and Doug pops in to find the truth behind the fate of the Prisoners Of Gravity chair. “The chair ended up in our garage after the series ended and I just knew that someday it would be worth something as a collector’s item, but, you know, raccoons pooed all over it and it went in the garbage eventually…” Rick summarized. A sad end to a beloved prop indeed.

Fan Expo Day 3: Videodrome Wrap Up

Fan Expo 2008 wrapped up yesterday, and we’re still reeling from it all. We’ve logged a lot of hours of footage, including what I think are some great interviews with guests from the show. Besides the already posted interviews with Tobe Hooper, Brian Bolland, Rocco and Shawn of Mega 64, Mike Pasley director of Frag, and others, we still have tons to come. Currently in the hopper are sit downs with Kevin Eastman, writer John Meadows, Major League Gaming co-founder and chairman Mike Sepso not to mention extended interviews with…

Fan Expo: Tobe Hooper Interview

Dave sits down with legendary director Tobe Hooper, who clears up his inspiration for Texas Chainsaw Massacre (hint: it’s NOT Ed Gein). “It occured to me if I start one up, you know that the people would part like the waters… that’s the true story.” Put that line in context, and you’ll get the point. Beyond that, he also discusses his influences, why torture porn has seen such a rise in popularity, and has a tip for budding film makers.

Fan Expo: Eddie Olmos & Aaron Douglas talk about the next Battlestar feature film

Almost live from Fan Expo, Admiral Adama himself is talking about directing the next feature-length Battlestar Galactica film. Olmos describes the project as a “Major motion picture”, although that appears to be a slip of the tongue, as Aaron Douglas later confirmed with rgbFilter’s Alex that the project is in fact a 2-hour television event that will air on the Sci-Fi channel.
