Alan Moore Interview at The Quietus

Alan Moore certainly doesn’t need an introduction to readers of RGB Filter.  The prolific and literary comics writer who altered the superhero landscape with Watchmen almost 25 years ago, and continues to push the boundaries to this day.  The Quietus has put online an interview with Alan Moore that originally ran in their sister publication The Stool Pigeon.  The interview is a great read, that goes wide afield from the typical comic interview, and I highly recommend it. Everybody is becoming [a superhero]. In the past I’ve tried to say,…

Cowboy Ninja Viking review

Writer: AJ Lieberman Artist: Riley Rossmo Publisher: Image Three Kinds of Badass… Literally… When a man tries to sell me a comic book called Cowboy Ninja Viking – about a hero who is a cowboy, a ninja, and a viking, at the same time – you might say that he is working from an advantaged position. When said comic is about a secret project by the US government to weaponise multiple personality disorder in order to create super-soldiers for the war on terror… well, I’m fairly sure my wallet was…

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is now an annual event!

A few days ago Christopher Butcher, the TCAF Festival Director & Co-Founder, posted his festival wrap-up on the TCAF website, Torontocomics.com. In this he thanks everyone who attended, and “some of the organizations and individuals who worked to make TCAF 2010 such an unprecedented success”. We can attest to this — this year’s TCAF was the best ever, and you can see all our coverage here. However the biggest news in his post was the announcement that the Festival would be returning in 2011, and would be occurring annually from…

Superboy – The Boy Of Steel review

Publisher:  DC Comics Writer:  Geoff Johns Artist:  Francis Manapul A Brief History of The Boy Redundant OK, so for those not in the know, the current incarnation of Superboy was conjured into life as part of the “Death of Superman” storyline, and his “big reveal” was that he’s a clone of Superman, but with powers based on ‘tactile telekinesis’ (it’s comic book physics dude, live with it). Of course, the whole clone thing naturally resulted in several years of “Oh my god, I’m a clone” moping, which Superman tries to…

Gigantic Review

Gigantic trade paperback Writer: Rick Remender Penciller: Eric Nguyen Colorist: Matt Wilson Totally Not Based On A Song By The Pixies Sometimes a comic book just leaps off of the shelf at you, for no good reason other than the sheer look of the thing.  Gigantic is a great example.  The cover art is gorgeous, deftly shaded pencil work picked out in bright colours, with a washed out light bloom effect, and, most importantly, a fucking huge robot dude being attacked by aliens with kanji script thrown all across the…

Sweet Tooth Volume 1 review

Mad Science, and Mike Mignola’s Missing Sperm If you’ve ever fantasized about surreptitiously stealing biological samples from Bill Willingham, Mike Mignola, and Cormac McCarthy in an effort to create a bold new breed of deranged comics creator (and let’s face it, who hasn’t?) then you need not fantasize any longer. Some genius of a mad scientist (OK, technically mad engineer) has apparently done just that, and this creation’s name is Jeff Lemire. It lives in Toronto, of all places. The real deal here is that this guy Jeff Lemire has…
