XDA Developers officially adds non HTC devices

Unlike many other phone enthusiast sites, XDA Developers, started out as a site for HTC phone owners.  After much speculation, and an initial test with the Samsung Omnia II, the site has finally pulled the trigger and introduced more non HTC phones.  They first added the Omnia II a few weeks back, and have now expanded that list.  I know from personal experience part of the reason I stuck with HTC phones in the past was the unofficial support and development from one of the best phone hardware communities out…

Telus first Canadian mobile carrier to do DRM-free music

I haven’t looked at buying music from a mobile device in a long while, but would have figured that DRM free was now de rigueur.  Apparently not for purchasing over the air on your phone, at least in Canada.  Telus has announced today that they have launched a DRM-free over the air (OTA) service.   In short, as a Telus customer, you’ll be able to buy music directly on your phone (with free 30 second previews).  Once you have it there, since you’re free of those pesky rights management issues you…

Mobilicity to launch this spring

Data & Audio-Visual Enterprises aka DAVE Wireless, has announced that when they launch their new wireless service in Toronto this spring, it’ll be under the much more consumer friendly Mobilicity brand, a contraction of ‘Mobile’ and ‘Simplicity’.  According to their homepage, if you say it fast it sounds like “Moblissity”, but that remains to be seen. Instead of being a national carrier, they plan on focusing on those who ‘live, work and play’ in Canada’s major cities. Some time this spring, Toronto will be the first to get a chance…

SMS response to Haitian Earthquake incredible

In the aftermath of the tragic earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday, there are a few mobile related events that show how enabling technologies can make a difference in the real world, either for one person or thousands. It was reported by Australian news yesterday that a Canadian woman who was trapped under rubble in the quake was able to send an SOS via text messaging to the Foreign Affairs Office in Ottawa, almost 3000 km away. The information was then relayed back to Canadian diplomats in Haiti who then…

Nexus One Press Conference live stream

Live video by Ustream Google and HTC are officially announcing the Nexus One at this moment.  You can watch the live stream above and it should be archived for the future.  Most of the hardware and software is what the rumours predicted, and there are some half measures to make stock Android function a little more like the Sense UI, though it’s not necessarily enough to make me happy.  At this point, there’s no official word on whether the phone will see a general release, or remain a ‘dev phone’…

Telus HTC Hero Review

Since the HTC Hero first launched outside of Canada earlier this year, the company’s take on Google’s Android has been the topic of much discussion. With the Hero, HTC has not only made arguably the first good looking Android phone (depending on your position regarding ‘the chin’, they’ve added their own software UI, known as Sense, on top of the OS. Before that, the only options in Canada were the HTC Magic and HTC Dream. Though solid enough, they lacked that ‘something extra’ one has come to expect with an…

Today documents and screenshots leaked out to Gizmodo and Engadget showing some Google pages, and HTC training materials, for the Nexus One Google phone. The HTC documents are also clearly labelled as for the HTC Passion, so these phones are one and the same. The HTC documents show that the Passion is HTC internal name for the Nexus One, but it is not clear whether HTC will sell it as the Passion in other markets outside North America. The leaked Nexus One images and videos showed the phone running ‘stock’…
