NXNE – fairly interactive
As the inaugural year for NXNE interactive (NXNEi), the annual festival played it fairly small, with the focus being on a number of panels and conferences leading into the much larger music and film component. With a number of fascinating panels, from brain-computer-interfaces by Interaxon to established internet artists such as zefrank and a presentation from Kickstarter, which crowd sources funding for art projects across many disciplines, NXNEi was definitely about establishing online connections, not just in the business sense, but on a more personal and human level.
Sometimes it wasn’t about establishing connections, though. In one of my favourite presentations, journalist Evan Ratliff recounted his tale of trying to vanish in the digital age, without moving to a cave in a remote jungle.
Compared to music and film, the interactive component of NXNE this year seemed pretty tentative, but attendance was high, and the crowds enthusiastic. In the coming weeks, we’ll be putting out interviews with some of the NXNEi presenters, and going forward, I hope to see interactive become a much larger part of North By Northeast as a whole. In the meantime, NXNE runs until June 20th, so there’s still time for you to check it out.
