Bell HTC Legend discontinued

It was only a couple of months ago when Bell released the HTC Legend (just after the Virgin branded one), an Android phone with a great aluminum unibody design and a gorgeous AMOLED screen.  Now it looks like that the Bell version of the phone has met an untimely demise, possibly due to the inability of HTC to get enough of those AMOLED screens out. Please be advised that, due to ongoing supply constraints from the manufacturer, the HTC Legend for Bell is effective immediately being discontinued and SKUs for…

Telus HTC Desire launches

I think that Friday August 6th 2010 can unofficially be labeled Android day in Canada.  That’s because Telus has officially launched HTC’s latest superphone, the HTC Desire, sporting the latest version of HTC Sense.  It’s also a harbinger of a possible price war to come, as it’s a solid 1GHz processor priced at $79.99, which is more than competitive with other high end phones. The new phone comes with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 5 megapixel camera (with flash), and a 3.7″ 800 x 480 screen.  We had a chance to…

Virgin HTC Legend review

HTC, once known as the go-to company for Windows Mobile devices made a wise business decision to embrace Google’s Android operating system from the very beginning, with the original G1.  Since that time, they’ve put out an almost dizzying array of phones on the platform, many of them running HTCs custom Sense interface, which first appeared on the HTC Hero. The HTC Legend, currently available on Bell and Virgin in Canada, is very much an updated version of the Hero, with a more polished design and a more current version…

Google’s Nexus One says goodbye

Google had already announced that they were going to end their direct sales of the Nexus One to customers some time ago.  As of today, the carrier-free unlocked phone is sold out, never to return.  Though there are carrier branded versions available in some countries, the real target of the Nexus One was early adopters, looking for the most recent and uncluttered Android interface.  To that end, the Nexus One will certainly be getting another round or two of official Android updates. There’s little doubt in my mind that the…

Telus officially announces the HTC Desire Android smartphone

Though Canada often seems a step or two behind in getting the latest and greatest smart phones, we’ve recently seen what could be called Superphones (you know, large high-res screens and 1GHz + processors) hitting our shores. Rogers is already carrying the X10 Bell has announced the Galaxy S.  Beyond Android, the iPhone 4 will clearly be in this category when released in Canada.  [ED Note: I’d put the Acer Liquid E in there as well, given its specs]. The latest announcement, from Telus, is that the HTC Desire will…

Bell also releases the HTC Legend

While we are still waiting for our Virgin Legend to arrive, so we can post our review of the latest HTC Android phone to be released in Canada, we also want to (belatedly) report that Bell has also officially launched the Legend. As mentioned in the article about the Virgin Mobile Legend, the Bell version was released, as the leaks indicated, last week, on Wednesday June 16th, with much less fanfare than the Virgin version (who had Richard Branson on hand in Montreal to launch the phone). The Bell HTC…

Virgin Mobile launches their first Android phone, the HTC Legend

In a surprise move, Bell launched the HTC Legend Android smartphone this past Friday, on their Virgin Mobile MVNO. Up until last week it was thought that the flagship Android phone in Bell’s line-up would launch on the main brand. On Friday Best Buy’s website was even updated prematurely, to show to Legend as available on Bell.  Later that day, however, it was Virgin Mobile who was the first carrier in North America to officially announce availability of the Legend.  At an event on Friday, Virgin Group Chairman Sir Richard…

Emailing AT&T CEO could result in a cease and desist notice

Over the course of two weeks, iPhone and iPad user Giorgio Galante sent out two emails to AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, requesting that he get the tethering that the US carrier has promised for a year, as well as having his eligibility to upgrade date bumped up. In response, Galante was told by AT&T’s Executive Response Team that if he continued to email Stephenson, AT&T lawyers would send a cease and desist letter. The whole fiasco certainly got a lot of responses, and one of my favourite has to be…

Mobilicity officially announces their plans, and they’re pretty good

Mobilicity is the latest of the new mobile carriers to officially announce their plans in the Canadian marketplace. As we mentioned before, Mobilicity (should be launching in June has offiically opened it’s doors).  Yesterday they launched their site, phone line up and plans, which include an all-you-can eat option for $65/month. Like Wind Mobile, who was first out of the gate after the spectrum auction, Mobilicity advertises the fact that there are no contacts, no hidden fees and no subsidized phones. The only thing extra on your bill is taxes….

Mysterious Telus HTC Triumph revealed to be nothing more than a Desire

Almost 3 weeks ago, MobileSyrup.com posted a Telus internal inventory screenshot, listing a ‘HTC Triumph White Handset’. A few days later, the MobileNinjas posted that it had a 1Ghz Snapdragon processor, and that it ‘resembles the HTC Incredible’. Also, members of the Howard Forums Telus HSPA message board had been speculating for weeks what this mysterious phone could be, and all evidence from Industry Canada Certification reports pointed to the Triumph being nothing more that a variation on the HTC Desire — itself a variation on the Nexus 1 running…

Microsoft makes bank on HTC Android devices: Weird, right?

The last 24 hours have been pretty interesting, and just a little odd, in the smart phone space. Beside HP purchasing Palm, Microsoft has announced a licensing deal with long time hardware partner HTC. The odd thing is that this applies to HTC’s Android devices, not their range of Windows Phone hardware.  This means that for every HTC Android device sold going forward, Microsoft gets a small piece.  It feels like the early 1990’s all over again! Microsoft claims that Android infringes on several user interfce and operating system patents….
