Meanwhile, in other news…

Apple released iOS 4 for the iPhone 3G and 3GS yesterday, just in time for Thursday’s release of the iPhone 4 in the US. More details can be found here at Apple, though I assume if you have an iPhone, you have already hooked it up to iTunes and downloaded this update, which, in the words of Apple, adds – over 100 new features…the free iOS 4 Software Update lets you do some amazing things. Wow, the old iPhone OS must have been pretty bad if they managed to add…

iPhone 4 Retina Display – pixel density does matter

At the WWDC keynote on Monday one of new iPhone 4 features that Apple focused on was the 960×640 Retina display, claimed to be the “highest-resolution phone screen ever”. While I initially dismissed its worth as typical Apple hyperbole, an interesting article on tested.com has made me think otherwise Computer screens aren’t getting any bigger — in fact, they’ve only continued to shrink. While larger displays continue to dominate the upper end of the spectrum, an increasing number of manufacturers are producing netbooks and tablets more suitable for Middle Earth…

iPhone 4 announced, coming to Canada ‘in the coming weeks’

Yesterday was Apple’s annual WWDC, where they have announced each new iPhone model since 2008. This year the worst kept secret in recent memory, the iPhone 4, was detailed in Steve Job’s keynote speech, and, unlike previous years, there weren’t that many surprises. Everything lined up with the leaked images and specs, and rather than repeat what most of you have already read, you can go to Apple’s iPhone 4 page here for more details. The keynote was notable, though, for what was not mentioned — the rumoured trackpad we…

Like Those Shiny iDevices? You May Not Like How They’re Made…

Apple’s least favorite bloggers Gizmodo.com have re-posted a story from the Southern Weekly newspaper who sent undercover reporter Liu Zhi Yi into Foxconn Inc who makes Apple iPods, iPhones, and the like for Apple. The factory has had a rash of suicides in the last little while and the company has hired everything from counselors to Buddhist monks to try and deal this this.  Here’s what the reporter found: During his 28 days of investigation, Liu Zhi Yi was shocked to discover how the factory workers live in a sort…

Android running on iPhone

Are you sick of Apple’s tactics lately, causing your eyes to wander, but your fetishism for their hardware has you firmly in their grip (or vice versa)? Maybe you’re just a little ‘Droid-curious? Well, it’s just about time to get your freak on. Android is now running on the iPhone 3G, and although there are still audio issues to sort out, all the antennas (WiFi, 3G, Bluetooth) are working, and it’s capable of making and receiving calls. You just can’t hear them yet. More info, plus the steps you’ll need,…

We weren’t actually going to post anything…

…on the iPhone 4G leak, since the combination of the hundreds of posts and articles online, in the mainstream media, and on The View!, has really drained the life out of this story. However some lively comments, made to each other via email, made me think that it is still our civic duty as a tech and geek news website to say something about the 4G, so here is what we all think:

Adobe’s Flash: Good, Bad or Just Ugly?

I have a few beefs with Flash… its security sandbox seems more restrictive than helpful. Most Flash vulnerabilities have something to do with null pointer exceptions rather than what programmers write, which one could point at and say “ah HA! Flash is bad!”. But when you think about it, what software doesn’t have security vulnerabilities? I mean, Apple recently dealt with a vulnerability that lets would-be hackers send an SMS that allows them to eaves drop on conversations and make your iPhone part of a botnet. Where was the outrage…

Apple sues HTC over 20 patents… war is on?

The news broke this morning that Apple is suing smart phone manufacturer HTC, maker of  many popular Google Android and Windows Mobile devices.  In their 700 plus page ITC filing, Apple lists a whole slew of specific HTC devices running both operating systems, including the Nexus One, HD2, Touch Pro, Hero, Touch Diamond, Touch Pro2, Tilt II, and quite a few more. It’s interesting that Apple is going after HTC as opposed to either Google or Microsoft and their operating systems.  There’s precious little, on first blush, in the patent…

Translating Fraser Speirs on iPad

Giving you the likely thinking behind this post by Fraser Speirs, quoted in its entirety [and translated] below… I’ll have more to say on the iPad later but one can’t help being struck by the volume and vehemence of apparently technologically sophisticated people inveighing against the iPad. [Many who normally love everything Apple and defend their products at length have a serious problem with this product. These traitors must be dealt with.] Some are trying to dismiss these ravings by comparing them to certain comments made after the launch of…

Bing to potentially replace Google as the iPhone’s search engine of choice

According to an article in Business Week, Apple and Microsoft have been making plans to bring The Find Engine to the iPhone, replacing Google as the search engine of choice on the rapidly aging Apple device. This move would exacerbate the already touchy relationship between Apple and Google, and would more distinctly define the two companies as direct competitors to one another in the wake of the release of the Nexus One, Google’s own high-profile smartphone. That said, it is unclear whether the decision to change default search engines is…

Smart Phone OS market growth: RIM the winner

Canalys, which is an independent technology analyst group, has released its latest numbers on the global smart phone market, and there’s some interesting stuff in there.  Overall smart phone growth was 4%, with the largest regional growth was 26% in APAC (East Asia, Southeast Asia, Australasia and Oceania), and North America saw a 5% increase, while EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa) actually dropped 6%.  The overall 4% growth is much smaller than the 13% growth last year, and some of this could be attributed to the global economic…
