Assassin’s Creed: Lineage Part 1 short film online

Remember when Ubisoft bought Hybride, the Montreal based studio that did effects work for Sin City, 300 and other films?  Besides continuing work on film effects, one of the fruits of that purchase is now available to watch online, in the form of Assassin’s Creed: Lineage. There’s also a good interview with Ubisoft’s UK marketing director talking about the convergence of games and film… “So the beauty of something like Lineage is that it allows us to take a lot of the assets developed for the in-game engine and create…

Painkiller Resurrection Demo released

Painkiller was one of those love it or hate it FPS titles.  If you were in the mood for good bloody fun, of the old school Quake variety with slicker graphics, it was right up your alley.  If you wanted a cohesive storyline and emotion, go look elsewhere. I’d recommend the movie “Fried Green Tomatoes”, it’s choke full of that stuff.  Painkiller is all about the fragging. In any case, the demo to the sequel is now out for download, (single player only) and I’d highly recommend you give it…

Hallowe’en Marks “Dead Before Dawn” Release

It’s no secret that Left 4 Dead is one of the favourite games around the rgbFilter offices (wait, we have offices?), and one of the most anticipated mods for the zombie-crushing classics has finally got a release date. “Dead Before Dawn”, based on the 2004 Zack Snyder remake of “Dawn Of The Dead”, is slated to be released on All Hallows Eve.  L4D makers Valve even went out of their way to send the mod makers a custom sound file for constant complainer Francis (which you can see at the…

Crytek releases CryENGINE 3

On October 14th, Crytek announced the release of CryENGINE 3, for use in the creation of 3D content.  What makes it interesting is that it’s capable of creating a unified development platform for delivery not just to the PC, but the Xbox 360 and PS3 as well.  IF they can live up to that promise, this should drastically shorten development times for licensees.  The promo trailer is certainly impressive… CryENGINE 3 also introduces CryENGINE 3 Live Create™. It allows developers to work with a single editor, but see and play…

Dragon Age: Origins Character Creator Available Now

Are you planning on playing Dragon Age: Origins on the PC (as opposed to the Xbox 360 or PS3)?  If so, and you can’t wait to start making your (first) character, then look no further (or at least a little further).  As the headline says, you can now download the Character Creator, and be ready to jump into the action when the game is released on Nov 3. In fact, I’d recommend it.  Just like other recent Bioware titles like Mass Effect, you can suddenly find you’ve spent a good…

Out of Left Field comes Planetside 2 – now with Micro Payments!

Totally out of the blue I received an email from SOE about a game I have not played in many years, Planetside. This was an online persistent world FPS, very much inspired by Tribes, that was far ahead of its time in many ways…and despite not being a huge success it captured a loyal core audience of fans who still play today. While many other attempts at melding MMO and FPS have tried and failed, Planetside still soldiers on.

Mass Effect 2 has beefed up combat system

Joystiq managed to get a hands one with Mass Effect 2 during E3 this year, and in the really good news department, they’re reporting that the combat component is a lot more ‘combatty’, or in their words, a it IS a shooter.  The game is once again being made by Bioware Edmonton, and this time round there’s a supplemental team at EA Montreal.  The original Mass Effect was the first RPG game I had played in a long time, as I had all but forsaken every other gaming type after…

Assassin’s Creed II: November 17

Mark your Julian calendar, because this November Assassin’s Creed II hits the shelves. Gameplay footage was shown off at the Sony presser today at E3. This time round you’re fast forwarding through time to play Rennaisance man Enzio (I’m only assuming he’s a relative of Altair’s). Playing Q to Enzio’s Bond is none other than Leonardo Da Vinci, tricking the surprisingly flashy assassin with flying wings and a gun… it’s at least somewhat era plausible though. That, and if the footage from today is any hint, Enzio will be able…

Blizzard (finally) announces Diablo III and will try to pry that console controller from your hands

After a week of wild rumors sparked by the gradually evolving teaser image that Blizzard posted for the 2008 Paris Invitational event, it was announced today that yes, everyone was correct. Diablo III is coming out ‘when it’s done’. They are not straying too far from the 3rd-person, isometric view, hack and slash gameplay of the first 2 games. Of course they have updated the tech to today’s standards, and if the videos posted online are any indication, the final game looks like it’s going to be a beautiful action-packed…
