Rogers taking pre-orders for the Xperia X10, launches April 15th

A few weeks ago, Rogers announced that pre-orders would ‘soon’ start for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, their flagship Android phone. That ‘soon’ is now, at http://www.rogers.com/x10preorder. New customers who pre-order the X10 with a 3 year contract will get a free Sony MW600 Bluetooth Stereo headset and a chance to win two tickets to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The headset is an especially nice promo, since online reviews of the MW600 have been very good. The X10 is $149.99 with a 3 year contract, which points to the…

Prince Of Persia: The Forgotten Sands gameplay video

The new Prince of Persia, due out in May, helps fill in the seven year gap between The Sands Of Time and Warrior Within, as seen in the new trailer, which has both gameplay footage and developer commentary. From the looks of it, it’s very much in the Warrior Within vein design-wise. Interesting to note that to build the game, Ubisoft Montreal made use of their in-house Anvil engine, which allows for up to 50 enemies on screen at one time. Besides the classic parkour style action, there’s some new…

Don’t turn on your PS3 for now: UPDATE – fixed

The widespread PS3 errors have been narrowed down, as expected, to a clock-related bug, at least that’s what Sony believes. In short, if you own an older “phat” PS3 (aka not the Slim), Sony is recommending that you do not turn on the console at all untill they announce a fix. So if you were planning on heading home today and firing up Heavy Rain, Bioshock 2, or watch a BluRay, you’re going to have to hold out just a little bit longer. We believe we have identified that this…

PS3 outage a leap year bug?

Late yesterday, reports started appearing across the social networks and message boards of PS3 owners losing trophy information and the console being unable to play game discs. At first it was suspected that this was due to an outage of the Playstation Network (PSN). Most users reported getting the 8001050F error code, and even booting up without a network connection doesn’t alleviate the problem. As more info has leaked out, it appears the problem is limited to the older ‘phat’ PS3 models, as PS3 Slim users haven’t noticed the same…

Out of Left Field comes Planetside 2 – now with Micro Payments!

Totally out of the blue I received an email from SOE about a game I have not played in many years, Planetside. This was an online persistent world FPS, very much inspired by Tribes, that was far ahead of its time in many ways…and despite not being a huge success it captured a loyal core audience of fans who still play today. While many other attempts at melding MMO and FPS have tried and failed, Planetside still soldiers on.

Sony Walkman Turns 30, 13 Year Old Gives It a Spin

That’s right.  The Sony Walkman has been around for 30 years now, revolutionizing portable music forever by allowing aural connoisseurs to listen to whatever they want, whenever they want. In celebration of the advent of the Walkman, the BBC Magazine had 13 year old Scott Campbell put down his iPod and try living for a week as if it was 1983, when cassette tapes ruled the mobile music roost.  There’s a LOT to recommend in the article, but my favourite line has to be… I mistook the metal/normal switch on…

GTA IV Release

Grand Theft Auto IV could possibly beat Halo 3’s record smashing one day media cash cow extravaganza, especially when GTA IV has been released on both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 on the same day. Halo 3 took in $300 million in one day, and GTA IV is estimated to top $400 million. Some pretty cool pics from the Toronto GTA IV pre-release event. Post photo courtesy of wv on flickr, who’s got a couple of more cool pics to boot.

The PS3’s Number One Flaw Fixed, Sold Out

It would have been cheap as sin to include an infrared sensor in the PS3, but Sony opted not to include it. Until now, PS3 owners have had to control their Blu Ray movie playback using the game controller, even if the rest of their home theatre setup was being managed by a remote that cost more than the PS3 itself. The other option was to add dongles, or buy the PS3 specific Bluetooth remote control, both pretty inelegant solutions, and still meant you had to get up off the…

Sony’s PMW-EX1 solid state camera

Sony announce their latest HD camera last week in New York. The PMW-EX1 uses Sony’s SxS PRO ExpressCard for recording and playback. The format should lead to lower power consumption than PCMCIA cards. With two SxS slots loaded with 16GB each, the camera can record over 100 minutes of high quality HD footage at 35Mb/sec, or 140 minutes at 25Mb/sec, in MP4 format. The estimated price of the new camera is expected to be about $8000 US. You can read more about the PMW-EX1 at the Sony site.
