Halo: Reach – The Battle Begins trailer

A new trailer was launched today for Halo: Reach, and this time around, it’s focusing more on the dramatic elements than the multiplayer gameplay.  Although thoroughly impressed with the multiplayer beta that came out in the spring, it’s good to see some more focus on the single player story.  Gamers have logged millions of hours of game time on the Xbox Live servers, but for me, the Halo series has always been about the epic space opera.  There are few game franchises that manage to capture that sense of scale…

The fastest browser on Earth

Opera, the 5th placed browser, released this funny video yesterday that parodies the Google Chrome speed test videos. Opera’s usage share of web browsers has held steady at approximately 2% since it came out. However, since its release in 2008, Chromes’ share has rapidly grown, at Firefox’s expense. I am sure Opera is hoping that this video will persuade other dissatisfied Firefox users to make the switch to them instead.

Next is Now: Rogers branding video

Rogers held their annual shareholders meeting today, and like many of these types of meetings, there’s some slick, well-made corporate video to set the mood.  I’ve been on the editing end of more than one of these, so I know how it works.  The thing is, this one from Rogers, well, kind of works. Using stats projected in urban environments, it communicates the message that the future is here… or “Next is Now” if you will. Some of the stats are somewhat odd though.  I did laugh a bit when…

Blackberry OS 6 unveiled on video

There’s a fair amount of news coming out from the RIM camp these days, but the one thing that is probably the most important is how they’ve refreshed their OS with Blackberry 6, and the above video gives you some ideas. It’s fresh, funky and oh so modern, that’s because it features every electronics manufacturer’s favourite musical act Black Eyed Peas. At least the song isn’t the grammatically questionable “I Gotta Feeling”. Seriously though, Blackberry 6 does have some interesting new elements to it, including a much better Webkit-based browser,…

NASA captures solar flares, confirms human insignificance, all in glorious HD

What you’re looking at above is awe-inspiring for two reasons; one, it’s a Gizmodo story that has nothing to do with a leaked iPhone, and two, it’s some of the first imagery and data sent back from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). In it, NASA was able to capture a full solar flare (or “prominence eruption”) in action, as well as several views of the Sun’s temperature variances and magnetic fields through several different wavebands. The purpose goes far beyond snapping pictures of the impossible, too: SDO is designed to…

New Photoshop features get demoed, drooled over

Adobe has released a video showing one of its new features, the “Content Aware Fill” tool. Similar to the Healing Brush tool, Content Aware allows users to paint over parts of an image to a point that they appear to have never existed at all. The video above shows this impressive new feature in a variety of common uses, but the most impressive one is hands-down the last one, in which the user fills in the missing parts of a photograph from absolute nothingness. The Content Aware tool is billed…

Ben Heck’s Bill Paxton Pinball

Ben Heck is well known as a game console modder, arguably THE most well known console modder.  He’s worked on dozens of projects, ranging from crafting a portable Atari 2600 that uses full cartridges all the way up to a portable version of the PS2 and multiple versions of an Xbox 360 laptop.  The latest creation is less about portability though, and more about the coolness of one of geekdom’s favourite actors, Bill Paxton… Since 2005 I have been working on building my own custom pinball machine and now it…
