Bumptop bought by Google

Toronto based BumpTop, makers of the 3D desktop interface of the same name, has been acquired by Google.  We’ve talked about Bumptop in the past, as it made for an interesting UI for touch screen computers.  Earlier this year BumpTop appeared on HP’s tm2 convertible laptop, as well as releasing a verison for Mac OS X. The front page of BumpTop has a letter to it’s fans, and for the next few days the free versions for will be available for download.  For paid users, there is an End of…

Microsoft makes bank on HTC Android devices: Weird, right?

The last 24 hours have been pretty interesting, and just a little odd, in the smart phone space. Beside HP purchasing Palm, Microsoft has announced a licensing deal with long time hardware partner HTC. The odd thing is that this applies to HTC’s Android devices, not their range of Windows Phone hardware.  This means that for every HTC Android device sold going forward, Microsoft gets a small piece.  It feels like the early 1990’s all over again! Microsoft claims that Android infringes on several user interfce and operating system patents….

Wardriving the planet: Google Street View style

Most people love the Street View function in Google Maps, and rightly so. It’s a neat gimmick at the very least, and if you find yourself in an unknown area, it can actually be useful. It’s helped fight crime, by helping police rescue an allegedly kidnapped girl,  but the Street View cars have been at the centre of controversy before, including snapping pics while driving along private roads, killing Bambi and more. This this now includes the Street View cars operating as the world’s largest fleet of wardriving vehicles.  Wardriving…

Dell’s push back into mobile leaked

Dell was a pretty major player back in the days before PDAs and mobile phones were mashed together to become smart phones. A device with a 3.7″ VGA screen and a 624Mhz processor sounds like pretty decent specs. Well, Dell released the Axim x50v back in 2004. The next year, they release the x51v, which was the last of their Windows Mobile devices. Although they didn’t have phone capabilities, they were certainly very powerful devices back in the day, and even now holder their own against some mid range smart…

At the moment it seems the update must be done with the Motorola software updater tool, found here – there have been no reports of an OTA update yet. Since I own a Milestone I will report on how the update went soon! UPDATE ONE: Success, though since I had a semi-rooted Brazilian ROM running on my phone, the update utility…

DHL Having a Problem with Google Nexus One Thievery

I recently ordered a Google Nexus One phone, it has been years since I have turned my back on the world of mobile gadgets but thought it’s time for me to give it another try. My excitement and mirth shot up when my phone came in a box that seemed too light to be believable. Upon opening the box, to my astonishment, I saw the Nexus One box ripped open, the phone and its accessories missing and immediately felt the palpable weight of a $600 vapor phone on my visa…

Chrome OS due out by end of 2010

Google CEO Eric Schmidt, while speaking at the Abu Dhabi Media Summit, announced that Google’s Chrome OS is still under construction, and on track to be released in the second half of this year. Chrome OS is a lightweight Linux based OS that uses the Google Chrome web browser as the main interface, and is geared towards lower end computing, such as netbooks and devices that make use of the mobile-geared ARM processors.. When Google announced Chrome, I admit that I was a little skeptical largely based on the usability…

Apple sues HTC over 20 patents… war is on?

The news broke this morning that Apple is suing smart phone manufacturer HTC, maker of  many popular Google Android and Windows Mobile devices.  In their 700 plus page ITC filing, Apple lists a whole slew of specific HTC devices running both operating systems, including the Nexus One, HD2, Touch Pro, Hero, Touch Diamond, Touch Pro2, Tilt II, and quite a few more. It’s interesting that Apple is going after HTC as opposed to either Google or Microsoft and their operating systems.  There’s precious little, on first blush, in the patent…

Bing to potentially replace Google as the iPhone’s search engine of choice

According to an article in Business Week, Apple and Microsoft have been making plans to bring The Find Engine to the iPhone, replacing Google as the search engine of choice on the rapidly aging Apple device. This move would exacerbate the already touchy relationship between Apple and Google, and would more distinctly define the two companies as direct competitors to one another in the wake of the release of the Nexus One, Google’s own high-profile smartphone. That said, it is unclear whether the decision to change default search engines is…

Nexus One Press Conference live stream

Live video by Ustream Google and HTC are officially announcing the Nexus One at this moment.  You can watch the live stream above and it should be archived for the future.  Most of the hardware and software is what the rumours predicted, and there are some half measures to make stock Android function a little more like the Sense UI, though it’s not necessarily enough to make me happy.  At this point, there’s no official word on whether the phone will see a general release, or remain a ‘dev phone’…
