Federal court kills Tory Wind Mobile decision

It’s been a busy week for the Federal government and the CRTC.  The latest is that Federal Court judge Roger Hughes has struck down 2009 Tory decision to overrule the CRTC when it comes to Globalive, best known as new mobile carrier Wind Mobile.  The appeal to Federal Court was launched by new entrant rival Public Mobile, which claimed that the government had overstepped its bounds in allowing Wind to launch even though it didn’t meet CRTC Canadian ownership regulations. The judge has instituted a 45 day stay, which lets…

Mobilicity and Wind offering $45 unlimited plans

Wind Mobile and Mobilicity have been fighting tooth and nail for customers dissatisfied with the Big Three.  Given Canadian love-hate relationships with Bell/Rogers/Telus, there’s a large pool to draw from.  The latest volley was started by Mobilicity, which introduced a $45 unlimited plan that includes North America wide calling, data, and global text messaging. Not to be outdone, Wind Mobile has also introduced their Winter Wonder Plan, which has the same $45 price tag, and a similar set of features, though unlimited calling is limited to Canada, while Picture Messaging…

Wind Mobile has finally launched its first ‘high end’ Android based phone, in the form of the Motorola XT720.  Priced at $450, with an instant rebate bringing it down to $430 until the end of September, the XT720 runs Android 2.1 on top of a Cortex A8 processor, and sports an 8 Mpixel camera (auto focus and flash), with a 3.7 inch capacitve screen.  In many ways, the XT720 is comparable to other high end Motorola Android devices, such as the Milestone, but with a better camera and no physical…

Motorola finally releases the Telus Milestone Android 2.1 update

While there has been no official anouncement from either Motorola or Telus, a post on the Alldroid.org forums tonight said that the Android 2.1 update was finally released yesterday. At the moment it seems the update must be done with the Motorola software updater tool, found here – there have been no reports of an OTA update yet. Since I own a Milestone I will report on how the update went soon! UPDATE ONE: Success, though since I had a semi-rooted Brazilian ROM running on my phone, the update utility…

Today documents and screenshots leaked out to Gizmodo and Engadget showing some Google pages, and HTC training materials, for the Nexus One Google phone. The HTC documents show that the Passion is HTC internal name for the Nexus One, but it is not clear whether HTC will sell it as the Passion in other markets outside North America. The leaked Nexus One images and videos showed the phone running ‘stock’…

Communications Union want to stop Wind Mobile

Last week, Industry Minister Tony Clement stayed the CRTC decision preventing Globalive from launching Wind Mobile in Canada. As a mobile consumer, this is a good thing, even though it does raise the question of foreign ownership rule in the Canadian telecommunications industry. By making a special case for Globalive, Tony Clement was definitely sneaking a peek into Pandora’s Box. Now, it appears that the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers’ union wants to close that lid again. “This decision is a sellout of Canadian national interests and a betrayal of Canadian…

CRTC overruled, Globalive given OK to launch Wind Mobile in Canada

It’s been a while coming, especially if you’re a Wind Mobile employee, but Industry Canada has overruled a CRTC decision that prevented the new wireless carrier from launching in the country. After spending millions on spectrum, you’d think that they’d be in the clear, but due to CRTC foreign ownership rules, Globalive’s actual launch was postponed. “The decision to vary the CRTC Globalive decision, let me emphasize, was based on the legal facts and not on the government’s position that there needs to be more competition in the marketplace,” Mr….
