Crytek releases CryENGINE 3
On October 14th, Crytek announced the release of CryENGINE 3, for use in the creation of 3D content. What makes it interesting is that it’s capable of creating a unified development platform for delivery not just to the PC, but the Xbox 360 and PS3 as well. IF they can live up to that promise, this should drastically shorten development times for licensees. The promo trailer is certainly impressive…
CryENGINE 3 also introduces CryENGINE 3 Live Create™. It allows developers to work with a single editor, but see and play the results in real-time on PC, PS3 and Xbox360, hooked up to a single dev PC. The engine takes care of the conversion and optimization of assets in real-time; enables instant, cross-platform changes to any part of game creation and as a result materially increases the speed, quality and significantly reduces the risk of multiplatform development.
You can read the full press release here or check out the CryENGINE 3 home page for more screen shots and videos.
from what I saw of an early demo cry engine 3 is actually a step back from cry engine 2 – in that in order for it to scale to 360 and ps3 they had to remove stuff — any game developed on one platform for all 3 systems is going to have to run best on the lowest common denominator…I’ll have to investigate further since I don’t want my PC’s gfx looking like a 360 when it can easily do so much more
I’m not entirely sure that’s true. The impression I got is that you have a unified development platform, and then scale back for each of your output targets, meaning that a high end gaming rig wouldn’t have the same limitations as the consoles.
I know that’s the way XNA works. Of course, that’s an all Microsoft solution, but the basic theory is the same.
If you have a link to the early demo, I’d like to see it, out of curiosity.
