CRTC overruled, Globalive given OK to launch Wind Mobile in Canada

2009-12-11-windmobile4

It’s been a while coming, especially if you’re a Wind Mobile employee, but Industry Canada has overruled a CRTC decision that prevented the new wireless carrier from launching in the country. After spending millions on spectrum, you’d think that they’d be in the clear, but due to CRTC foreign ownership rules, Globalive’s actual launch was postponed.

“The decision to vary the CRTC Globalive decision, let me emphasize, was based on the legal facts and not on the government’s position that there needs to be more competition in the marketplace,” Mr. Clement said.

“That said, I firmly believe, that Globalive entry into the market to provide near national service will enhance competition for the benefit of Canadian consumers. A competitive marketplace assists consumers by giving more choice, at better prices and higher quality.”[from the GandM]

This didn’t stop Wind though, as they manned kiosks with nothing to sell, and launched a very effective ad campaign without any way to join them.  With the news of the go ahead, we can expect their home page to be updated fairly soon with plan rates and phone options.

UPDATE: Globalive announced that they could launch as early as next week in Toronto and Calgary.

“Now we’re ready for action,” Globalive chairman Anthony Lacavera said Friday in Toronto…
“We are going to launch as early as next week. The last six weeks have not been easy for us,”…[from the GandM]
