AMD’s Next Gen Graphics Card
Shortly after the details of Nvidia’s new chipset leaked out, AMD’s demoed their new RV770 chipset.
The short clip above is real-time game play using their Ruby character and was rendered by a single PC equipped with two “RV770” codenamed graphics cards powered by an AMD Phenom™ X4 9850 Processor and AMD 790FX Chipset. AMD is planning on introducing the RV770 ‘this summer’, along with a more detailed demo of it’s capabilities.
Though the ‘consumer-level’ card is clearly aimed at gamers, I can’t help but wonder how it’ll perform when working on 3D animation, making pre-vis just that much better.
I can’t say I’m a fan of the “Cinema 2.0” term, which suggests that everything in film from the late 1800’s until the card’s release is “Cinema 1.0”, or that games should even be trying to gain respect by hitching their ‘artistic credibility’ to film, but hey, I can get past that hyperbole… mostly.
You can find more info at AMD’s site, including additional video commentary from game developers and gamers themselves. Sure it’s marketing hype, but if the demo video is any indication, this is going to be quite the impressive jump.
