Canada opens arms for a Rogers hug. Rogers responds with swift kick to nether regions.
Well, as has been blogged about ad nauseum by this point, Rogers officially reselased its iPhone 3G pricing plan today.
You can see it here, but you’d probably rather not.
But let’s break it down anyway.
The minimum plan, the one most of us will likely be going with, is $60, including data and voice. “WHAT?!?” you’re saying as you grab your wallet and Motorola KRAZR and jump off the couch and head to the nearest Rogers store. (Personally, I almost peed.) But then you decide to read on and discover that that $60 gets you the following:
• 400 MB a Month. (The break that down as up to 200,000 text emails or 3,100 web pages or 1,360 photo attachments.)
• 150 anytime minutes. (Or one fight with your girlfriend over how much of a retard you are for spending the monthly grocery budget on your frackin’ iPhone.)
• 75 “BONUS” sent text messages. “Bonus”??
• Unlimited incoming text messages. I suppose I should be grateful they at least didn’t rob me of something I already had, even if they ARE trying to sell it back to me as a bonus feature. “BONUS”?!??!?
• Unlimited access to Rogers Wireless and Fido hotspots. I’m looking forward to all the thousands of posts from people who think they’re getting away with using a Non-Rogers-or-Fido WiFi hotspot.
• Additional weekday mins: 35¢ (or 15¢ if you went balls-to-the-wall and bought the $115 plan….see their site because I’m not even gonna talk about that.)
• Additional Data, for if (when) you exceed your generoud 400 MB: 50¢ per MB for the first 60 MB, 3¢ per MB thereafter. Actually, that’s not so bad…a damn site better than the 5¢/Kb we’re used to. So OK, no real argument there.
So some quick math says: $60 + 6.95 saf + 13% Tax = $75.65. OK, that’s a *LITTLE* steep, but doable, and basically what we were expecting, if not hoping for. The features are lean, but whatevs, it’s an iPhone, and that price prolly includes all you need like Call Display, just like the phone I already have.
…what?
Quoted from their site:
Value Packs for iPhone 3G
Add a Value Pack to your package and save up to 53% off the regular price of Wireless Essentials.
Simply put, getting Call Display will not only also get you a lot of other crap that most of us never use (WTF are “WhoCalled™” and “Caller RingTRax™”?!??), but will run you a minimum of $15/month. there appears to be no way to select features independantly.
So a little more math:
$60 + $6.95 + $15 + 13% = $92.60. A month. For a PHONE.
And that doesn’t even include 911 service or whatever else they force you to pay for with a wireless phone.
So ya, I guess you could say I’m a little pissed. I’m sick and tired of the monopolization of wireless service in this country, essentially being held hostage by one large corporation simply because they’re in the enviable position or being able to call the shots. Apparently “give the people what they want” is a non-factor when there’s money to be made.
That said, I am indeed a self-described and shameless hypocrite, because I WILL be buying one. I am a Mac Fan and I have pined for an iPhone for over a year now. My iPod is biting the dust after 3 years of continuous daily use and I need an upgrade. At the end of the day, I am the guy Ted is relying on: The guy who just wants the frackin’ thing.
Frack you Ted, you magnificent bastard. (See ya on the 11th.)

The Rogers prices are craptacular to say the least.
I’m surprised that Apple let Rogers price the data so high, given the relative similarities between the Cdn and US market. Then again, since Rogers is the only GSM game in the country, there would be no other way for Apple to get the phone in the country.
I guess we’ll have to wait for Bell, Telus to enter the GSM side of things in a couple of years to see real competition.
In the meantime, I’ll enjoy my HTC Touch’s $7 unlimited data plan from (the otherwise equally evil) Bell. 😀
Looks like the Star is taking a hard stance on the middle ground:

I love this line: ~All of the packages include unlimited access to Rogers and Fido Wi-Fi hotspots.~
That’s like saying “Buy this car and we’ll include free air for your tires.”
this is funny.
It’s also more than a little explicit, so govern your clicking accordingly. 😉
