F**k You Rogers becomes Ruined iphone, gets over 12000 signatures and counting

RuinedIphone.com

What probably started as what the creator thought might generate a few thousand signatures from Howardforums.com and iphoneincanada.ca readers has quickly snowballed over the weekend to be one of the week’s top tech stories, with one digg being the 12th highest overall digg in the past 7 days. What is more impressive to me is that this is a Canadian story, something that rarely gets much attention in the mostly US-centric tech news on the web.

Ruinediphone.com now has (as of 6pm EST, June 29th) 12,725 signatures. Interestingly, as you can see from the title of this post, it started out with a name that was a little bit more in your face, but I guess as the amount of signatures grew far beyond what the creator had originally expected it was changed to be a bit more ‘safe for work’!

Hopefully the name change, the growing number of signatures attracting some mainstream media attention and the emails that angry consumers are sending to Apple and Rogers Executives might actually make Rogers listen and re-think their plans, but many of us at rgbFIILTER highly doubt that. Since when has Rogers ever paid attention to what the consumer wants?

Sadly the true test of people’s resolve — what I am sure Rogers is counting on — is how many of those 12,000+ signatories will still line up on July 11th and buy an iphone — probably most of them.

  2. As I said before, I am indeed a total hypocrite. Even with the outrageous pricing and the stick-it-to-the-little-guy mentality of Rogers Corp, my desire to own an iPhone is winning out over my hatred of Ted’s greed. As I posted before, I see this as my new iPod, which needs replacing, and my desire to get my hands on a shiny new gadget is, while very 2-dimensional, too strong to ignore. Don’t think I’m not more than a little ashamed of it.

I strongly encourage everyone else who is upset at this exploitation of monopoly status to NOT follow my example. All the signatures and bad press in the world will never compete with just plain not buying into it. Speak with your wallet people. It’s the best way to get your message across.

  3. FYI:

“27,915 people say NO to Rogers.”

  4. You mean “X number of people sign online petition… most will be in line on July 11th” 😀

  5. heh…sad truth, perhaps.

But a LOT of ppl on forums and blogs are vowing not to open their wallets.

    Not me tho.
