Video Comics All The Rage
Is it just a matter of synchronicity, or something else?
In the last couple of months, I’ve seen quite the increase in the idea of ‘video comics’, where traditionally drawn comics are turned into semi-animated stories. The original artwork is scanned in, voice actors recite the dialogue, and traditional camera techniques applied, such as faking depth of field, panning and zooming and so on.
MTV just announced the video comic adaptation of the traditional print book “Invincible” which will air on MTV2, as well as be available targeted at iTunes and mobile phone users. You can see a sample here.
In order to promote the video game Dead Space, EA has released a prequel comic series of the same name written by Antony Johnston and artwork by Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night). The comic has also gone through this video adaptation, complete with special effects, and is being released online in chapters (as of this writing Chapter 3 is the newest episode).

The two adaptations take on a very different feel, with Invincible being much more about whizzing panels around, and using pop up dialogue balloons, whereas Dead Space doesn’t use the dialog tradition, and takes a much more ‘filmic’ approach. Both techniques are interesting in their own right, and work for their subject matter.
Although I’ve included a link to view part of Dead Space here, if you have an Xbox 360 or PS3 I recommend that you go to their respective video download services and get the high definition version of each episode (available for free).
A couple of updates:
Dr Squid was also kind enough to point out that Invincible is written by Robert Kirkman, writer for the best zombie comic of all time, The Walking Dead.
I’m also my own worst editor. Originally I had also mention the animated comic version of the Hellboy II prologue, which can be found on Apple’s website.
What can I say, it’s Monday.
Invincible, created by Robert Kirkman
who is the creator of the best Zombie comic ever, The Walking Dead
My bad on not mentioning that. I LOVE The Walking Dead.
