Sharp Galapagos tablets to run Android, not called tablets
It looks like Sharp is the latest to enter the tablet game, announcing their new Galapagos 5.5 inch and 10.8 inch tablets e-book readers running Android. Galapagos is also the name of the e-book/newspaper service that will come with the devices, which will delivers over 30,000 newspapers, books and magazines when the service launches in December (Japan only for now). Sharp’s decisions to not mention the Android operating system in it’s press release, as well as marketing these as e-book readers, and not tablets, are both curious to say the least.
The devices themselves are somewhat interesting. The smaller 5.5″ mobile type features a 1,024 × 600 resolution screen, and a trackball at the bottom for one handed navigation, while the larger home type has a 1366 x 800 resolution screen, and does away with the trackball. Both are meant to be used with WiFi, as no data plans are mentioned in the press release, and although they’ll be able to surf the web, little is mentioned about the full functionality beyond reading capabilities. They do mention the ability to ‘read PC documents’ and there will be a built-in social networking application.
With no mention of availability beyond the Japanese market, it’s quite possible that these ‘e-readers’ may never officially launch internationally, and there’s no pricing available at the moment. You can see more pics on the Sharp Japan website.
