Child of Eden at Tokyo Game Show – Rez Super HD?

Child of Eden, from Q? Entertainment, the spiritual successor to Rez HD (Rez remade), had an extended demonstration at the Tokyo Game show. If you’re not familiar with Rez HD, it’s ostensibly a 3rd person shooter where your hacker avatar attempts to infiltrate an advanced computer network controlled by an AI named Eden. The game itself was completely on rails, but that didn’t stop it from becoming one of the best titles released on the Xbox LIVE Arcade. What makes that game stand out is it’s balance of visuals and audible cues. As enemy targets are locked onto, you’re greeted with a clapping sound. When you fire your weapons, you were greeted with musical cues.

That’s because creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi conceptualized the game to generate a synestheistic effect, by tying the visuals with musical cues and even the sense of touch if you had the PS2’s Trance Vibrator (which had it’s own uses beyond the game), or made use of multiple controllers on the Xbox 360 in Rez HD.  In short, Rez HD was the ravers game.

In Child of Eden, to be distributed by Ubisoft sometime in 2011, it appears the the gameplay is very similar, but the graphics are further evolved, as evidenced in the gameplay trailer above.  It’s interesting that the term ‘sequel’ is being avoided, even though the storyline ties into and continues the story of the universe presented in Rez.  What’s really interesting is that though Child Of Eden can be played by traditional controllers, Q? Entertainment is also making the game compatible with Microsoft’s Kinect controller-free peripheral for the Xbox 360. If there’s ever a game that’s suitable for moving around like a space age conductor, I’d say it’s a hacking game that flies you around an all-encompassing data network, with a soundtrack provided by Genki Rockets.

You can see some Kinect gameplay in the video below:
