Netflix dominates Canadian bandwidth usage but that’s okay

Online streaming services are clearly starting to take hold in the minds of mainstream consumers, and if bandwidth usage is any indicator, Netflix is leading the charge.  Shortly after launching their streaming only service here in Canada, Netflix accounted for 95% of all Canada’s network usage duing the peak time of about 9:30pm, according to broadband analysis firm Sandvine.  This is an absolutely staggering number, but not surprising given the amount of pent up demand for just such a solution.  Combined with a free month trial, it’s no surprise that Netflix overtook everything else during it’s initial launch.

Outside of that traffic spike, Netflix also accounts for 20% of all traffic in the US, as part of the up to 45.7% of data usage that online streaming media consumes in general, according to Sandvine.  It’s no surprise that Rogers cut 10GB/month off of it’s data caps the day Netflix announced it was coming to Canada, and the growth of streaming shows another misnomer touted by some content providers – that torrents are destroying both the internet and film and television production.

In the past, carriers have claimed that it was the popular peer-to-peer technology that was eating up all the internet traffic, but even two years ago, bit torrent accounted for just shy of 20% of all traffic.  In 2010, that number has dropped to 13.2%.  Considering that streaming services such as Netflix, and Hulu in the US, have grown from less than 20% two years ago to 45% in the same time frame, it’s clear that consumers want digitial content, whether it’s at home or on the go.  Of course, expect the huge popularity of streaming services to become a new vector of attack buy carriers, even though all analysis shows that the cost to move data on the backbone are at a historical low.
