Chumby now available in Canada
After years of waiting, the Chumby store is now taking orders from Canada, at a price of $120 US for the Chumby One. If you’re not familiar with Chumby, it started out about four years ago as a modified Linux OS customized to run on small screen hardware, specifically the Chumby hardware.
The hardware itself is about the size of an alarm clock, but with a 3.5 inch colour touch screen, with the Chumby Classic encased in a soft leather and plastic casing, while the newer Chumby One in a hard plastic shell and adds a volume knob and FM tuner, helping to reduce its cost. While widely praised a couple of years back, and being named one of Wired magazine’s top gadgets of 2008, the limited availability especially outside the United States have kept it more of a hobbyist device.
There are over 1,500 apps available on chumby – all free – in more than 30 categories, such as weather, news, entertainment, sports, and much more.
- Choose from tens of thousands of stations from SHOUTcast Radio, stream your own favorites instead, or play your own music through a USB connection
- Stay connected to your social networks, including Facebook and Twitter
- View and share pictures from your favorite photo sharing sites, including Flickr, Photobucket, and Picasa
- Listen to podcasts from the New York Times, CBS, and Mediafly
- Stay close to the auctions and classifieds you care about with the eBay and craigslist apps
- Stay current on all the latest tech news from Engadget, Gizmodo, and other tech blogs
- Play games, including those that use chumby’s motion sensor
- Watch movie trailers and video clips from YouTube and CBS
- Find out what’s happening in the sports world with news, scores, and video clips
Although some content will be US centric by nature, most features should work in Canada. Earlier this year, Sony announced the Sony Dash, which runs a modified version of the Chumby software on a larger 7 inch 800×480 screen, while still supporting the free widgets available from chumby.com.
