Out of Left Field comes Planetside 2 – now with Micro Payments!
Totally out of the blue I received an email from SOE about a game I have not played in many years, Planetside. This was an online persistent world FPS, very much inspired by Tribes, that was far ahead of its time in many ways…and despite not being a huge success it captured a loyal core audience of fans who still play today. While many other attempts at melding MMO and FPS have tried and failed, Planetside still soldiers on.
Much to my surprise the email was for a survey about Planetside 2! Wow I never saw that coming, and there have been no rumours online about this. With a fresh coat modern graphics and perhaps some AI to fill out the battlefield, to address one of Planetsides biggest issues – large areas that never had a big enough player population to create the massive battles that were advertized – Planetside 2 could be a huge success. What’s more I think it would be an ideal cross platform title – how about an online FPS that allows PC, PS3 and 360 players to duke it out?
Here is the annoucement fromt the email:
That’s right, you heard what we said! We plan to expand the PlanetSide® universe with another game and we need your help with the design. After all, who knows the game better than you, our customers, the people who actually play it! Don’t worry about the original PlanetSide, it isn’t going anywhere.
We want to hear your opinion and to do so we have put together a short survey. The information you provide will play a critical role into helping guide the development and direction of the next hit Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter. As a loyal player and experienced shooter fan, we value your input and look forward to hearing what you have to say.
In the survey there are strong indications that they are planning to make this a free to play title with micro payments, and with the recent announcement from EA that Battlefield Heroes has 2 million players SOE can obviously see the potential in another free to play online FPS.
