Telus lauches Blackberry Storm 2. More Polar bear jokes ensue.
Telus launched the Canadian-made premium touch screen smartphone, the Blackberry Storm 2, on Wednesday. The original storm was considered RIM’s answer to the threat of touch screen phones, like the iPhone, and was not considered a big success.
With the new Storm, RIM has applied the lessons learned from their first attempt – the Storm 2 runs the latest Blackberry OS 5, has more memory, Wi-Fi and an improved ‘Sure Press’ touch-screen. Since RIM has not officially launched a North American frequency HSPA Storm 2, Telus is launching it on their CDMA network. The ‘old’ network is expected to run aside the new one for many years, so that won’t be an issue, and existing users may be able to keep their current plans, if they upgrade to this phone (instead of being forced to switch to one of the new plans if they want to move to an HSPA device).
Since Telus is the second carrier in North America, along with Verizon, to release the Storm 2, the news was widely reported online today. Unfortunately, as is common with a lot of US-based media, Boy Genius Report posted about the release, and had to slip a polar bear joke in there.

We Canadians know this is all in good fun, but really it would be nice sometimes to read an article about Canadian tech news without poutine, igloos, polar bears or eskimos coming up!
Outright price is $599, and it is $199 on the usual 3-year term, with a minimum voice and data plan.
