RED Update: More info on new Scarlet and Epic cameras

RED has posted more information about their Scarlet Digital Cinema Camera; of particular interest are the specs and prices for the fixed zoom lense camera.

For the Brain & Lense, you’ll be looking at $3000 (USD) while the complete kit (details to be revealed later) has been given the price of $3750 (USD).  This is good news as it keeps the Fixed-lense Scarlet at an affordable price, considering most prosumer HD cameras go for around $5000-$7000 (USD).

In addition, RED has revealed a limited edition “thank you” price for the Epic-X camera package.  This includes the EPIC S35 camera, CF Recording Module, IO and Battery Module for $28,000 (USD).  Only current REDONE camera owners will be permitted to buy the Epic-X as it involves trading in their REDONE camera for a credit of $17,500 towards the purchase of the Epic-X package.

Warning – The Following is Speculation – Please Read with a Grain of Salt

One interesting note about the specs for the Scarlet is the fact that while it will be able to record 3K digital film material from 1-120 fps (150 fps burst), the FF1080p HD material can only be recorded at 1-30 fps. This seems odd because 3K material is higher in resolution than 1080p, so one would think that you should be able to record 1080p material at higher frame rates than the 3K material.

After talking about it at great length with Doug Groves, we’ve come to the idea that the FF1080p mode is a type of quick-shoot mode for those who only need HD quality material to be shot very easily and quickly. Otherwise, if the Scarlett follows the REDONE shooting conventions, one would simply shoot in 3K or higher resolution and simply downscale the material to HD.
