Nexus One Press Conference live stream
Google and HTC are officially announcing the Nexus One at this moment. You can watch the live stream above and it should be archived for the future. Most of the hardware and software is what the rumours predicted, and there are some half measures to make stock Android function a little more like the Sense UI, though it’s not necessarily enough to make me happy. At this point, there’s no official word on whether the phone will see a general release, or remain a ‘dev phone’ like the earlier HTC Android devices.
UPDATE: Although not available yet in Canada, the Nexus One IS going to be sold to the public, either unsubsidized directly from Google, or subsidized via carriers (T-Mobile US being the first, Vodaphone and Verizon to follow in ‘Spring 2010’). Other manufacturers and carriers will also be hoping onboard the Google phone train as well. Even so, manufacturers will still be able to make Android phones with their own enhancements and personally, if I were to switch to Android, I’d be holding off for a Sense UI loaded phone. The biggest news to come out of the event, since most of the other details match up with what was leaked last week, was the exisitence of a CDMA model for Verizon. Also the doom and gloom of the Nexus One competing against other Android phones, and causing a rift in the Open Handset Alliance, was largely dispelled, when it was revealed that Google’s plan is to offer a wide variety (assumedly from multiple manufacturers) of Android handsets directly, with or without service, and the Nexus One is only the first model.
