Bing to potentially replace Google as the iPhone’s search engine of choice

bing_iphone

According to an article in Business Week, Apple and Microsoft have been making plans to bring The Find Engine to the iPhone, replacing Google as the search engine of choice on the rapidly aging Apple device.

This move would exacerbate the already touchy relationship between Apple and Google, and would more distinctly define the two companies as direct competitors to one another in the wake of the release of the Nexus One, Google’s own high-profile smartphone.

That said, it is unclear whether the decision to change default search engines is coming from Apple’s internal team or from pressure from Google to affect change. Add to that the fact that this is another one of those reports from “people who wish not to be named”, and this may very well be a non-story. (It’s pretty thin as it is, but it’s kind of a slow news day ’round here.)

If true, the Bing replacement could take place as early as January 27, when iPhone OS 4.0 is widely rumoured to be announced along with the widely-rumoured-to-be-announced Apple Tablet computer. Fingers crossed that the iPhone UI gets an overhaul, as its current Palm OS 4.0-esque GUI is very, very, very played out. Until then, all Apple rumours will remain exactly that.

  1. Rumour has it that Bing Maps will be part of that too, and that Apple is ‘de-googling’ itself quite a bit. If MS can carry over both the Photosynth like street view, and the cool isometric view from the desktop to the mobile, that would be awesome.

    1. If so, it won’t be a part of OS 4.0. It just wouldn’t work on the existing hardware.

If there’s any truth to that thought, then it would raise hopes that the 4th iPhone would be a significant evolution in hardware specs; significantly greater than that of the 3G to the 3GS.

Mobile devices have seen a major spike in their evolution in the last few months. Apple won’t be releasing an updated device until June, at the earliest…if they don;t take this opportunity to surge back to the front of the pack in terms of technology and innovation, then they risk being left behind.

  2. 285175 255431I was curious if you ever thought of changing the page layout of your blog? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or 2 images. Maybe you could space it out better? 602734
