Bell bringing 3D Masters to Canada
Bell announced today that it will broadcast a 3D HD version of the Masters golf tournament, at least in a limited time frame. This marks the first 3D HD broadcast in Canada since January’s Consumer Electronics Show rode the Avatar wave to make 3D an important check box in the tech specs.
Bell will be showing 2 hours of the tournament in 3D, between 5pm and 7pm Eastern, on channel 1000. To watch it, you have to be a Bell HD subscriber with the right package, and don’t bother looking for those old red/blue cardboard glasses from the last 3D promo you decided to watch. The only TVs available in Canada that are capable of showing the 3D HD feed are Samsung 46 and 55 inch models, which start at about $2900 (not counting the polarized glasses, which run for $450 for two adult pairs).
Though it’s an expensive setup, sports has always been a leading sell for new technologies. For example, fans of various sports will agree that their game of choice looks much better in HD (including golf). Though 3D has a low market penetration at this point, as more sets roll in, expect sports programming to lead that push once again.
