Telus finally confirms their iPad plans, NOT offering unlimited data as originally thought
The image above, created earlier today, was based on some assumptions taken from Telus’ weekend announcement of their iPad plan. After some speculation on Friday, a press release was sent out on Saturday detailing their offering – a single plan of 500MB for $20, which at the low-end is a much better deal that what Bell and Rogers are offering, and unlike their plans, Telus’ is available post paid (sadly with a $35 activation fee). What was more intriguing though was that overage is charged at 5¢ per MB, ‘up to a maximum of $30 for a total of $50 per month’. The awkward wording led many to believe if they went over 600MB (what $30 @ 5¢ per MB works out to), the plan would technically be unlimited data.
Sadly this is not the case.
It was initially thought there would be a generous ‘fair-use’ cap – one commenter at ipadincanada.ca posted that the cap was 10GB. If that were accurate, Telus would have had the best iPad plan in Canada, since Bell and Rogers charge $35 for 5GB. However, Telus clarified their iPad plans when they updated their website today (why this was not live Friday confounds me). The page states that the ‘maximum allowed data usage per month will be 5GB’ relegating Telus’ plan to being the worst high use iPad plan in Canada (other than that it can be set up as post-paid).
The silver lining to this though is that, for someone planning on mostly using their iPad on Wi-Fi, the additional 250MB for only an extra $5 is welcome. Also, since Telus’ plan is post-paid, and allows overages, there is no chance you’ll run out of your pre-paid data in the middle of using it, like you can with Rogers and Bell.
