Samsung Galaxy S coming to Telus too?
UPDATE – According to MobileSyrup, the Telus Galaxy in question is actually going to be the mid-range Galaxy Apollo. Hopes dashed.
When Samsung announced the launch in Canada of the Galaxy S ‘Superphone’, on Bell, they also said that
“Canadian consumers can anticipate the release of additional Galaxy S smartphones throughout the rest of 2010.”
Well, it looks like Telus might be the first carrier to have one of these ‘additional’ Galaxy S phones. On Howard Forums, one of the internet’s best discussion groups for phone geeks, the image above was posted a few days ago, and while it doesn’t implicitly say that the launch is for the Galaxy S, it is clear from the invite’s wording that it can be for nothing else. The party is to ‘celebrate…[the] countdown to the launch’, so we speculate that the Telus Galaxy S will be officially released the following day, Friday August 13th. If you are superstitious this might not the best date to release a new phone!
Some of the Telus forums member are also speculating (or hoping and praying!) that the variant of the Galaxy S coming to Telus will be the slide-out keyboard model, the Epic 4G. However since this is a CDMA/WiMAX Sprint exclusive, that Samsung has not announced an HSPA version of, we doubt that this will be the model that Telus is releasing. It is more likely that all the Canadian versions of the Galaxy S will be the same, possibly (at the most) with some minor cosmetic differences. Samsung could always surprise us though, so all those Android fans looking for a high-end phone with a hardware keyboard, keep your fingers crossed.
Interesting it was only a few days ago that the rumour leaked that Rogers would also be carrying the Galaxy S in September. If this proves to be true Samsung will be (as they are in the US) making sure the Galaxy S reaches the largest audience possible, by having it available on all three major Canadian carriers. Samsung also offers an AWS Galaxy S, on T-Mobile in the US, which would be compatible with Wind and Mobilicity. However we doubt, with their subscriber base, that Samsung will release this version of the Galaxy S on either of the newer carriers. We could be wrong, but it will probably won’t be until a Galaxy S 2 comes out before these carriers will carry a high-end Android phone from Samsung. [ED Note: Of course, you can always get an unlocked T-Mobile Galaxy S from the US to run on the new carriers.]
Hopefully an official announcement with more details will be forthcoming from Telus, however don’t expect this until after the Bell Galaxy S is officially released.
